Dell Latitude D440 non-boot /lockups - with or without special parameters

Asked by David C Fletcher

I have tried to load Ubuntu on to a Dell Latitide D400 laptop. Initially the screen died, I fixed that using VGA=771. However the machine still locks up. I have systematically tried all of the special parameters listed on the help screens, Tried to boot from DVD, CD and USB stick, but the machine still locks up. I'm stuck any ideas?

Have you tested your RAM for errors?
Does the screen simply go black when you boot the live CD

Yes I have tested for RAM errors and it reports no errors.
When I boot from either DVD, CD or USB, the machine comes up with a text menu. If I leave it, it continues to start the boot sequence with the tcoloured text splash screen and eventually it clears the screen and locks up.
If I interupt the initial menu and add the parameter VGA=771, it locks up with Ubuntu header and the dots underneath. Sometimes it leaves residual text from the script such as [ok].
Sorry I forgot to mention I'm trying to load Ubuntu 10.04.

I've just tried the boot up parameters in a different order and it ran for a little while and then left me a bit more of the script before it stopped. The process locked as follows:
" Ubuntu 10.04
. . . . * Speech-dispatcher configured for user sessions."

The parameters used were:
noapic nolapic acpi=noirq vga=771aic7xxx.aic7xxx=no_probe--

The problem seemed to be linked to missing video drivers for the Dell Laptop. It has been solved by loading the latest version of Ubuntu. It now works fine.
