Black screen blinking white cursor after installing Ubuntu 10.04

Asked by Ryan Turner

I had a dual boot of Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.04 working in perfect harmony on separate HDDs, but I somehow reset or corrupted the boot files of both with an application called EasyBCD. I ended up having to format both drives to try and start over. I am attempting to install Ubuntu again from a USB drive, and I can't get it to work. I can run Ubuntu live from the USB stick, and go through the installation process completely, but when I am prompted to reboot my comp after the installation, I get a black screen with a blinking white cursor like a DOS screen. I've tried holding SHIFT when trying to boot up, and it doesn't do anything. Note that no GRUB menu comes up when I attempt to boot the comp.

It sounds like GRUB isn't being written to the proper disk. Ensure that you choose the "Advanced" installer method and specify the location where GRUB will be placed. (The disk you wish to boot from.)

There is also a way to install GRUB after the fact which requires a bit of "magic". Very useful for those occasions when the installer tramples a perfectly good GRUB setup. Details here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2#Reinstalling%20from%20LiveCD
