cannot raise screen resolution over 800x600

Asked by Aymincendiary

the screen resolution will not go over 800x600. Because of this, the NEXT buttons for the mouse are below the bottom margin of the screen.

Therefore I cannot install Ubuntu.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Keyboard shortcuts would do the trick to simulate the mouse functions during install. Pressing ENTER did not do it for me after I selected computer name and password.

I had the same problem. I was also using the Knoppix 5.1.1 live Cd version of Linux at the same time I was trying to install Ubuntu. Knoppix worked fine, It would let me set my resolution to 1024 x 768, but I couldn't get Ubuntu to go to 1024 x 768. So, I copied the file /etc/X11/xorg.cfg from Knoppix to the same file in Ubuntu. and ran /etc/init.d/gdm restart. Ubuntu then gave me the option to select the higher resolution, and I could see the entire install screen. And the Knoppix file was retained through the Ubuntu Install process. So if I go to the file now in Ubuntu after installing Ubuntu on my hard drive, the file is still the Knoppix one. Hope this helps.

Whats your video card? If its Nvdia....check your monitor's manual for supported HorizSync, VertiRefresh rates and Resolutions. open Terminal and execute this
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
Change to Nvidia, and accept all deafults and correct the HS and VR rates and Resoluton..

And if you do not want to answer all the questions but only those which are rated with high priority:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg
