Laptop restarts when attempting install

Asked by Stephen

Hey team, attempting to install ubuntu-10.04-desktop-i386 onto my laptop, it tries to boot from the cd, i get a Loading ISO Linux or something that flashes up quickly then 2 pictures down the bottom of a black screen, one kinda resembles a little keyboard or something, the other a man in a circle, this stays for a while, maybe 10 - 15 seconds then the computer restarts and repeats this process.
I checked the MD5 on the iso to the one provided and it came up the same.
Suggestions? Am I meant to be using the netbook install? or is desktop right?

Laptop is an Acer TravelMate 280
Currently there's a partial install of windows on the harddrive.

Sorry if this is a repost, I looked through and found someone with a similar problem but they got asked about the MD5 last month and never replied.

Hi,

When you see the two images at the bottom (keyboard and small human), press any key and you'll access the classic live CD menu. After choosing your language, press F6 and you'll be presented with different choices. try "nomodeset" or "Acpi off", then Try Ubuntu on this computer.

If it does'nt work, repeat the process again with different F6 choices. Do not forget to check your live CD before (md5sum).

Hope that helps

Also use the same screen as described above to test the CD for defects

Also test your RAM and make sure your BIOS is the most up to date.

Thanks guys.
So I can get up the classic menu., ram check i select, cd spins up and then nothing, disk defects; cd spins up and then system restarts. Tried with a variety of F6 menu choices but to no avail.

Went looking for a bios update, but it appears none have been released.

Please try the alternate image install cd to see if it works...

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation#Installation using the Alternate CD

http://releases.ubuntu.com/lucid/

Please download and burn the alternate install cd iso image from here

http://releases.ubuntu.com/lucid/ubuntu-10.04-alternate-i386.iso.torrent

i strongly suggest you to use .torrent protocol to download the image to avoid download errors.

If the system is spinning then stopping it sounds like a faulty drive. Is there any way you can install with USB?

Can you help with this problem?
