Need to specify the type of monitor

Asked by ClairGarman

I am running Ubuntu 10.04, freshly installed from CD. My monitor type is designated Unknown and there appears to be no way to specify the monitor type - ViewSonic G90fb. I am using a 2 port KVM switch.

How can I specify my monitor type?

You don't need to specify it as long as it is working properly. Using the KVM switch might prevent the model autodetection. So, do you have any problem with it?

No, I have had the KVM switch for at least 5 years and never had any problems.

What is the actual problem besides the monitor description being "Unknown" instead of "ViewSonic G90fb"?

When booting and when using the "Change Desktop Background" from right clicking on the desktop, I have received a red dialog box that complains that the monitor type cannot be found. I have just re-booted to get the exact text in the red dialog box, but the dialog box did not appear.

At boot the desktop background I have chosen (a photo) does not appear for 10-20 seconds after the panel and startup applications appear. This behavior did not occur in my previous Ubuntu 9.10.

Does that happen with the monitor directly connected to the computer?

I have not connected the monitor directly. The problem of the red dialog box does not occur consistently.

In addition I find that I am unable to obtain a finer resolution than 1024x768 on the Unknown monitor. Previously I used a finer resolution.

Is there any way to specify the monitor type or must it be auto-detected.?
