Xubuntu terminal crashes the X server

Asked by sophont

Hello,

I have older computer (Pentium II, 160 mb RAM, 4 GB harddisk) so I run xubuntu. I use alternate install disk and there is no problem during install.

Problem is when I try to start terminal (by clicking assessories > terminal) the system restart itself to log on screen.

Could anyone help? I think I need to use terminal because I need to run ndiswrapper to install Belkin wireless usb receiver. Thank you.

So you see the gdm login greater again?
That should not happen!

Follwing two ways may give a solution to your problem

- Have a look if xfce4-terminal is installed.
  For this start synaptic,
press <Ctrl>+<f> or the menu 'Edit' - 'search'
  and enter 'xfce4-terminal',
  press OK.
You should see a filled rectangle in front of the name xfce4-terminal
Or click 'Properties' in the menu bar
A new window will popup and in the tab 'Common' you should see a
line 'Status'. If 'Status' is not 'Installed' you may install
    xfce4-terminal
    Close the Properties window
     Install xfce4-terminal
For this right click xfce4-terminal and select 'Mark for Installation'
Click the 'Apply' Menu on top of the synaptic window.
     Thats it so far
Now start the xfce4-terminal by right-click on the desktop and
   choose 'Terminal'

- another solution might be to log in to one of the VT's
When you loged in via gdm you may switch back to one of the VT's (Virtual
Terminals) VT1 to VT6. They are running all the time aside to your X-Window
session.
You will reach those VT's e.g. VT1 by pressing
 <Ctrl>+<Alt>+<F1>
You will switch back to your running X-Window session by presing
 <Ctrl>+<Alt>+<F7>

thomas

Dear Thomas,

Thanks for your help. I can access terminal via VT.

Still can't access via gdm, ther is message display (so many I can't read at once), but most have [OK] afterward so I suppose it is Ok as said. (I am always sucker for this :) ).

Only one this seems not ok, saying that "cannot create .... CPU frequency not supported".

Would that be related to my current problem?

Thats ok, you CPU is a bit oldish and doesn't support CPU frequency scaling.

I think the restart problem is related to a crash of the X server. To understand what caused the crash we need you to look at these log files and paste them here if possible:

.xsession-errors (this is located in your home directory)
syslog, messages (these are located in the /var/log/ folder)

I assume you have created a swap partition?
Can you also check what is the amount of memory before and possibly when trying to start the Xfce4-terminal application?

Memory amont 86 Mb of 154 Mb used , SWAP is 31 of 227 Mb used before opening terminal.
and start terminal can't be checked because it restarts itself

while I try to post syslog and message, I think it is too long it gets time out error, but I will try to figure out how to post it.

I'm a bit confused, mainly because I'm not very familiar with Xubuntu, but I thought that Xubuntu used a different Desktop Manager than GDM!?

Dear Cesare,

I am sorry. I am newbie so sometimes, no, most of the times I confuse myself and other people.

Desktop environment of Xubuntu is Xfce.

No need to be sorry, I'm just puzzled by this, which is showing up in .xession-errors:

/etc/gdm/PreSession/Default: Registering your session with wtmp and utmp
/etc/gdm/PreSession/Default: running: /usr/X11R6/bin/sessreg -a -w /var/log/wtmp -u /var/run/utmp -x "/var/lib/gdm/:0.Xservers" -h "" -l ":0" "root"
/etc/gdm/Xsession: Beginning session setup...

and a bit later:

/usr/bin/startxfce4: X server already running on display :0

And a the end:

gnome-mount 0.5

just before the crash.
So, I was wondering if you ended up with some kind of mix up?

Was it a full clean install?
I still see that gconf is started:

ubuntu gconfd (mickey-5324): starting (version 2.18.0.1), pid 5324 user 'mickey'

and then creates some problems as obviously is conflicting with Xfce.
Have you perhaps installed some Gnome programs?
Is the terminal, the Gnome-terminal?

As for X crashing when you open the terminal, I recommend the following:

To do this, you'll need to boot into an xterm session, so when the login
screen comes up, click on the Sessions icon, and select Terminal session or
something similar (I don't have a Xubuntu install with me at the moment).

* navigate to your /etc/X11 folder and make a backup copy of your xorg.conf
file. You can do this by entering:
cd /etc/X11
sudo cp xorg.conf xorg.conf_backup

* edit your xorg.conf file, changing the default depth from 24 to 16. You can
do this by entering:
sudo nano xorg.conf
. . . then scroll down to the Screen section, and find the DefaultDepth
option. Change that number to 16.

*press control-o (letter "O") to save the file, then press control-x to exit
the nano text editor.

Then exit from the xterm session, and it should bring you back to the login
window. Select an Xfce session from the session button, and proceed to login
as usual.

I hope this helps! Sorry it is kind of a non-pretty way to do things, but
it's hard to tell you to enter these changes into a regular terminal when the
regular terminal crashes your X session! I think that this should work,
though . . . It's a known issue on older machines, and I've helped 3 or 4
people to fix their systems using this approach.

Thanks for help, Jim.

I end up installing my local flavor linux (based on Ubuntu 6.10) and it works well.

I even end up being able to install ndiswrapper and upgrade some program on my own.

Thanks for everyone's help. I have learnt a lot in this past week, and now I am really in love with linux.
