[Xubuntu] Wierd box keeps showing up in corner of screen

Asked by _blink_

Hello,

I recently installed xubuntu on my computer everything was going fine but every once and awhile this happens to my computer

When that little box shows there is no way to take it off. It just randomly shows up and disappears. It is very annoying and is pissing me off. Does anyone know what this is and how to make it stop showing up?

Thanks!

Try this out: right-click on your desktop-> change desktop background
-> visual effects -> none. That should help :)

That is not an option on xubuntu.

I notice you have XChat running in that screenshot. I might be wrong, but it looks like a notification box that just isn't working properly. Does it come up when you are running other things but XChat? If not, I'd suggest disabling those types of notifications in XChat and if it comes up when you're doing other things disable it there too and see if that helps solve the issue.

Thanks,

issyl0

Hello, this seems like a broken notification system of some program. See what programs use notifications for you, and try disabling some of them

Hi :)

On you bottom taskbar, beside the FireFox icon is a weird blue squiggle. Is that the equivalent of the "Start button" for Xubuntu? If it does show all programs then try looking in there for an "Administration" or "Preferences" menu and look in one of those for "Display", "Appearance" or something like that. I think the correct route is

"Start button" - Preferences - Appearances

Thn in the gui that pops up click on the "Visual Effects" tab at the top and set that to "None". If that does work and solves the problem you can experiment with seeing how far you can turn that up before you start getting problems.

As a side-note i am wondering if the specs of your machine are only just above the minimum requirements for Xubuntu. Please let us know your cpu speed and ram size, if you can. Don't worry if you can't or don't want to. I know someone installed "lxde" to make Xubuntu very much lighter on resources and now his machine flies along really fast. It does look very old and basic but it makes everything work so smoothly that it might be worth trying. You can change which DE (Desktop Environment) you use at each login. At the login screen choose "Options" and switch back to Xfce if you don't like lxde

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
