Ubuntu 10.04 wacom bamboo

Greetings,

I am trying to get a wacom bamboo [usb] to work with ubuntu. All sources point to the Linux Wacom project. Although I am squeamish about recompiling and modifying my kernel, I followed the described steps described in the project but to no avail. Is there going to be any support for tabletts within the ubuntu kernel anytime soon or is there a binary package that a rookie like me can just click and be happy?
