xdg-desktop-portal 1.6.0-1ubuntu2 has broken my Conky

Asked by danindenver

When I boot to the desktop, normally all of my desktop icons appear, and then my Conky appears.
Now, Conky appears first, and when the desktop icons finally show up, Conky disappears, although it is still running (in ps)
It has taken me 2 weeks to figure this out. I am not particularly proficient in Linux, but I have identified that this is the problem pkg.
Can I uninstall this update? Or revert to the previous version?

Here is most of my config:

xdg-desktop-portal provides a portal frontend service for Flatpak, Snap,
and possibly other desktop containment/sandboxing frameworks. This service
is made available to the sandboxed application, and provides mediated
D-Bus interfaces for file access, URI opening, printing and similar
desktop integration features.

Terminal: sudo apt upgrade xdg-desktop-portal
         sudo start conky

Temporarily.

Re: "Terminal: sudo apt upgrade xdg-desktop-portal"
Tried it. Received message:
"xdg-desktop-portal is already the newest version (1.6.0-1ubuntu2)."

Re: "sudo start conky"
Received message:
"sudo: start: command not found"
which I'm surprised at. I don't know what happened to start.

However, I know that I can start conky manually, That's what I've been doing for 2 weeks, but it isn't supposed to be that way and it is a tedious process that I haven't figured out how to automate, yet.
First I identify the process, then I kill it, then I open a Run Application window and start conky again.
I know I should submit a bug report, but I'd like to make sure that I have useful information to submit with it.

Manfred Hampl suggests this article as an answer to your question:
FAQ #3041: “No support for Linux Mint”.

"It has taken me 2 weeks to figure this out."

Then the culprit cannot be xdg-desktop-portal.
Its last update in Ubuntu was published only eight days ago, not two weeks.

But as already written before:
We cannot help with Linux Mint, its support is elsewhere.

"Then the culprit cannot be xdg-desktop-portal."
After struggling with this for an UNSPECIFIED number of days, I used Timeshift to revert to a Nov 22 snapshot.
My problem went away.
Then I painstakingly added one or more packages back in to my system until I was down to one and only one package upgrade: xdg-desktop-portal.
Upon adding that back in, the problem reappeared.
My logical conclusion is that xdg-desktop-portal 1.6.0-1ubuntu2 IS the culprit.

"We cannot help with Linux Mint, its support is elsewhere."
And this is why people hate Linux. There is no cohesive community of helpful individuals who are willing to help their fellow humans, despite the origin of the name, Ubuntu.
I have looked through the Mint forums, without success, but when I found that this package comes from here, I came here to seek assistance.
The answer I would expect from the linuxmint community is that this package is upstream, so I have to look upstream for answers.
Again, my original question was, "Can I uninstall this update? Or revert to the previous version?"

"Its last update in Ubuntu was published only eight days ago, not two weeks."
And this is why people hate Linux forums.

My original question was, "Can I uninstall this update? Or revert to the previous version?"
I was able to open the package manager and remove this package.
Something has changed drastically in this package, but since I don't know enough to fix it myself, I will just go away..
Sorry this was such a hard question.
