Unable to connect with xchat

Asked by laonious

I just installed xchat 2.8 without any modification. When I tell it to connect to a server it says connecting (server info)... but nothing happens. Also, I tried connecting using telnet and it doesn't work either so I imagine the problem lies with my network settings. I'm not sure what I can do, I'm at a university, and it seems odd that I would be unable to connect to irc on their network. Do I need a proxy server or I've heard about identd is that something I need? Thanks!

often universitys block certain 'ports' to stop people from going on irc/email/whatever which means that you can't connect to the irc server. you may have to talk to your university network admin and ask them to unblock the ports. you could also consider using a web based irc such as http://ircatwork.com/
