Command line URL

Asked by Narcis Garcia on 2008-06-02

If I click on a link as in the web page:
http://www.mozdev.org/community/irc.html
and specify Mozilla Firefox to open this with X-Chat, this last application doesn't connect to the specified server nor the specified channel.

I believe that is much important that if someone starts X-Chat with a command line like this:
xchat-gnome irc://irc.mozilla.org/#mozillazine
...the application obeys the parameter over the program settings.

Hello

IRC follows a different standard and its defined as IRC URL standard

http://www.w3.org/Addressing/draft-mirashi-url-irc-01.txt

and the second parameter which is in that standard so the URL opens with your IRC client

Regards

Bhavani Shankar.

Following that standard, the following URL should be valid?
irc://irc.mozilla.org/

I've looking for URL or parameter questions in the application help, but I haven't found how must be specified the parameters.

Bhavani Shankar (bhavi) said : #3

yes If you are connecting to a specific server.. If you are connecting to a channel in a server then channel name should be specified

irc://irc_server_name/#channel

example :

irc://irc.freenode.net/#ubuntu-helpteam

With Ubuntu GNU/LInux 8.04 (Hardy Heron) 64-bits and "xchat-gnome" package v0.18
I've tried running this line:
xchat-gnome irc://irc.freenode.net/#ubuntu-helpteam
but opens the "preferences" settings (server&channel).

Bhavani Shankar (bhavi) said : #5

OK that is a link only when you click on it it opens in xchat-gnome its just like a web link

run only this command please

irc://irc.freenode.net/#ubuntu-helpteam

Press alt+f2 and copy the above and click on run

Conects to the server, but doesn't open the channel.
And how to solve the web browser links?

Bhavani Shankar (bhavi) said : #7

OK you can download xchat

sudo apt-get install xchat

and remove xchat-gnome

sudo apt-get remove xchat-gnome and try again

OK wait a min

Do you have a nick name setup?

Narcis Garcia (narcisgarcia) said : #11

Of course, the first time I open "xchat-gnome" I gave a nick name, and now "xchat" has taken the same data.
