Have you installed and configured video drivers? If not, please provide the output of:

lsb_release -a; sudo lshw -C display

A suggestion: Since this appears to be an issue reported against 9.10 Karmic Koala Beta, you should file a bug report so that it gets the attention of the appropriate developers, hopefully before the official release.

From the terminal type:

ubuntu-bug xorg

... and follow the instructions that will appear after that.

And, if it's any consolation, I filed a bug regarding Desktop Effects in Karmic too (different video chipset than yours though). Good luck.

I down graded back to 9.04 and everything works just fine now.
