Shouldn't wordpress depend on mysql-server?

Sorry if this question has been asked before. Shouldn't wordpress depend on mysql-server? If not, can someone elaborate as to why not?

Because I assume you can configure Wordpress to connect to a different MySQL server. It doesn't have to be localhost.

You are absolutely right, thanks. it turns out that the problem was me being imprisoned in localhost :)
