Video converter for ubuntu

When i download songs from youtube using terminal they are downloaded in .flv format but i want to convert them to .mp4 format for better video and sound quality. So plz tell me how to convert them to mp4 or to download a software to convert them will be easier.
Im ubuntu with 2 GB ram and 280 GB hard disk and 256 MB graphics card.
Thnx in advance and plz help me.

Sorry to say, but you can not increase the quality just by converting it. If the information is not in the original file, you can not invent it.
