Wine and Fisher Price Computer school

Asked by NakiMum

Decided to give in to my 3yo daughters nags and got her a Fisher Price Computer School for Christmas.
It can be viewed here http://www.fisher-price.com/fp.aspx?st=10&e=ccslanding
Anyway, installed it using Wine. Went through the whole process. I can see that it installed but I keep getting an error when I try to run it.
I installed it into our documents folder which is easier for me.

Anyone got some advice for me?

The error message I keep getting is

Exception EExternal Exception in modul FPCCS.exe at oo32E9B0
Eternal exception C0000025

What the FPCCS is is pretty unclear. From what I see it could be the password installation which I'm not opting for.

Not all apps run in wine, in fact some won't even install at all, some need extra tweaking and some will install and run then crash

Have you run winecfg to tweak the wine settings (E.g. set the system to Vista)

as I say, not all apps run. You can see what I mean here. Unfortunately the app isn't listed so you are on your own:with trying to get it to run.

You could try posting at the Wine forums at http://forum.winehq.org/viewforum.php?f=2&sid=cf93fd62d6715dfe8667ca8c589bf83f
They might be better able to identify the error.
If not, file a bug.

Wait, if it's a USB device it won't work in Wine at all.
This is being worked on, as I understand it, but is a current shortcoming of how Wine works

If you're still interested in getting it running in Linux, you could try running it in VirtualBox (the closed source version which support using USB devices with Windows drivers) or VMWare. The experience won't be quite the same of course since these are virtual machines, but I believe both support running in headless/seamless/mixed modes that will make it appear that you are running the program on your actual Linux desktop, not inside the virtual machine.

Also, just to clarify, Wine does support USB devices, but does not support Windows drivers for the devices. You should also send Fisher Price asking them for Linux support for good measure, even if it will involve a Wine "port".

You will need a valid license and install media if you intend to use virtualbox so it is not a free solution (although it will work). It will also bloat the system as you will be effectively be running 2 operating systems concurrently. If the main use of the system is this software then a native windows install rather than a virtual system may be a better choice. Linux is not always the answer. If its just an app to be used as well as the others available in Ubuntu then a virtualised system will allow you to run it (even if it is a little expensive)
