Adobe Photoshop

Asked by lisajones

I work with photoshop alot and I am thinking of switching from windows to Linux. I also work with other programs and need to know if they will be supported by linux. Here is what I work with:
Adobe Photoshop
Paint Shop Pro X2
My printer is a Brother LC61 and an HP Photosmart 385
I have an external hard drive, Maxtor.

Will I have problems with these if I switch to linux?

Wine may or may not run your graphics apps. You should consult the appdb:
http://appdb.winehq.org/

This link will show you what printers will and will not work:
http://www.openprinting.org/printer_list.cgi
HP are very supportive of Linux. Some brother printers run ok with the open drivers. The site will tell you what's what.

The drive will work just fine and its manufacturer is moot.

For starters, you might as well give up on the Brother if you want it to work. There are no drivers that are out for that model of printer. However your HP should work, I found some driver information on HP's site that show linux support. As for Photoshop, your best bet is Photoshop CS2 or earlier, or running it inside of a virtual machine. Some people will suggest the GIMP, but I'll be flat out honest and say it is not an EQUAL alternative, more so a lesser one. Paintshop will not install, even through wine, calling it a corrupt installation. Lastly your maxtor drive should work, but if the system you're using does not have NTFS support I'd recommend installing it, because I assume thats the format it's in.

Wow! Ok thanks for all the information. One last thing... My version of photoshop is 7.0, so that one will work, right??

Adobe Photoshop 7.0 software.
The professional image-editing standard, helps you work more efficiently, explore new creative options, and produce the highest quality images for print, the Web, and anywhere else. Create exceptional imagery with easier access to file data; streamlined Web design; faster, professional-quality photo retouching; and more.
Selected Test Results (selected in 'Test Results' table below)
What works
Mostly, all works, some examples :
- main toolbar
- layers window, and any other floating window, provided you let the windows manager control all in winecfg (Display tab)
 - filters
- automation
Photoshop 7 works out of the box in wine, but plugins often need more, like dotnet 2.0 or visual c dlls. I had a hard time installing those, even with the help of winetricks.

What does not
when a picture window is maximized then closed, graphics garbage remain in the main window.

What was not tested
