cant launch dvd-rom in ubuntu 9.04

Asked by jonty21

I have a dvd-rom from the magazine PC User.
I pop it in the disc drive and it loads, so I can see it on my desktop.
I then double click to open it and all it does is display the files. If I then open any of the files I am told there is no launcher .exe to support it.
I did expect to just be able to double click the desktop image to have the dvd open the current PC User offerings.

However I just cant get it open, and although I have searched for a few days I cant find anything on the forums to help me with setting up the launcher or anything at all.
To be quite honest I have run out of ideas and am finding ubuntu hard to follow logically, ie you either Know it or you dont.
there doesn't seem to be any intuitive help at all.

Can you give me some idea of what to do next,
Many thanks, Jonty.

Hello Jonty,

I think you miss one fundamental rule: You can't run Windows programs on Ubuntu without the help of an application called 'Wine' (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Wine). And even with this program, there is a chance the Windows program doesn't work without problems or that it doesn't work at all.

I don't know what kind of programs are on that dvd, but if they are very important, i'm sorry to say you must use a Windows PC. But first, search for alternatives! A great deal of windows applications have good or maybe even better alternatives on Ubuntu (but don't search the web, go to "Applications -> Add and Remove Software" on the upper left of your screen)

If you have more questions, please ask! We were all beginners once ;-)

Hello Marnie,

Yes thanks very much for your explanation.
I have done as you suggested and found that the programs will now open for me.

Thanks for taking the time to reply, I really appreciate it,

Regards, Jonty.
