Need help to install MS Framework 2.0

Asked by Reid Nunn

using Wine version 1.0.1-0ubuntu-6

Have searched forum for installing Framework 2.0 but the answers are "above my pay grade".

Please understand I'm a linux newbie.

Can somebody tell me how to install MS Framework 2.0?

Maybe something through Synaptic Package Manager???

Part 1 of your answer at the link:
How do I get to the wine config file to "set Windows 2000 as your default app in wine config."

Part 2 of your answer at the link:

When I open the terminal window, I see the following: user1@user1-laptop:~$
Does "one by one refe"r to separate windows or separate lines?

I did not see a save button.

Just to let you know that I'm not lazy about this, I did search online, but did not understand the replies. I am at the most basic level.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Ok, for general help tips on migrating from Windows world to linux world
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SwitchingToUbuntu/FromWindows
And as a linux noob you might appreciate working through this following guide step by step (instead of just dipping into it as with the previous guide)
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu
I tend to still keep going with non-free components with this but hopefully will be able to go completely OpenSource one day and then i'll really be free ;)

Also bear in mind that many people answering questions in here are quite new to linux themselves but want to try to help others and repay the community so no-one is assuming you're not doing the work. We may be just going quiet because of being unsure of details ourselves. Somehow you seem to have slipped through the normal net of having quite a few people bouncing ideas around. Here's the Wine website and their forums or documentation might be more helpful about this particular type of issue
http://appdb.winehq.org/

I would avoid using anything microsquish as much as possible, it's part of the reason for going into linux. I am not sure what "framework" is about but it seems to be on the same number as ".Net"? If you're trying ".Net" stuff then please go with "Mono" instead as everything that works in ".Net" works in Mono but Mono brings some new tools to the table to develop it further. Personally i would steer well clear of all that tho.

Getting back to trying to set Win2k as your default OS in Wine try going up to the top taskbar and click on

Applications - Wine

and now hunt around in there for "config" or "cfg", something like that should bring up a familiarly Windows-ish type pop-up box but many of the tabs will give you slightly different things than Windows would give. Somewhere in there is a tab detailing setting the default WinOS for specific different apps and the drop-downs in there can help with setting the global default for Wine too. Good hunting!

Good luck and regards form
Tom :)

Ok, you've pushed me into doing this at last :) I've been meaning to do this for a while now. I installed Wine :) Top taskbar, click on

Applications - Wine - Configure Wine - Applications

(this last was the tab at the top of the pop-up gui box) in that gui box go right down to the bottom and see the drop-down that currently says "Windows Xp"? Click on the triangle there or just use your mouse wheel to scroll it down to Win2k and then click on the "Apply" button at the very bottom. Now, since the middle box in that tab was already set to "Default settings" you have set the default for the whole of Wine to be Win2k :))

Now it's time for me to install a few games and things as i've been promising a few certain people for several months lol
Thanks, good luck and regards from
Tom :)
