Can I use Microsoft Word on Linux?

I'm presently taking a course, Introduction to Word Processing, which uses Microsoft Word. Is it practical for me to use Microsoft Word on Linux? I'm to try to included course materials information. Introduction to Word Processing — UVC1021

Yes you can, need install program wine. Also can pay for one program (Crossover) based in wine.

I haven't been able to install Wine, yet; I don't know how. The directions given at WineHQ are confusing to me. I suppose I'll luck up and accidently figure it out eventually -- unless someone gives me step by step directions. Simply giving me commands doesn't work for me because I don't know how access terminal boxes, etc..

You should be able to find Wine in System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager. It's just a matter of a few clicks to install it.

Getting Word and Office in there might be more of a challenge, in that these packages are commercial software which will cost you money to obtain (unless you go down the murky path of using pirated software).

Depending on the depth and objectives of the course, you might also want to investigate whether it would be feasible to use the Open Office word processor instead. It is different from Word in many details, so it might be more trouble than it's worth.
