Linux is NOT Windows. Windows is NOT Linux.

You can run SOME Windows programs under Linux using Wine, Wine-Doors, PlayOnLinux. Cedega, Crossover, Win4Lin etc BUT NOT ALL

What programs are you trying to install? What are they called?

I have installed VirtualBox with USB support and can access most of the devices that I need. You do however have to install the non-OSE version of VirtualBox. Instructions of which can be found here:

I think linux has a native linux program to support phones. usually the one program can support a number of different phones so that when you get a new phone you don't have to get a different program that then can't talk to your old phone.

Before having a look it might be worth adding the Medibuntu packages and repositories - i tend to go with including non-OpenSource for this but it's more than just a minor ethical choice, there are many different implications for including non-Free but so far i haven't suffered any problems.

Now try going up to the top taskbar and click on

System - Administration - Synaptic Package Manager

it asks for your normal user password, not your SuperUser/Root one. Note that all the programs you already have on your system are marked by a green splodge. I would use the "Search" button because it searches package descriptions as well as titles so it allows me to be a bit more vague. I would start by searching for "LG Incite Cell Phone" and then "LG Incite Mobile Phone" and then broaden the search to something like "mobile phone" and hopefully find something suitable or a few things worth trying. To install something new just right-click and choose "install", usually programs need extra libraries and perhaps codecs and perhaps even other programs such as command-line tools and some other gui's. We call all these other packages "dependencies" and often even quite different programs may share a same library or 2 which helps reduce Ram usage ;) While you're in Synaptic it might also be worth clicking on "Mark all updates" before clicking on "Apply"

Good luck and happy hunting from
Tom :)

Lol, my first search suggestion got nothing using the Search button but hundreds of things when i pasted it into the Quick-Search area in Synaptic!

Lol, take care about starting trying to program your phone until after you've learned a bit of programming though! I would recommend sticking to one (or a few) of the packages about accessing the phones filesystem and address-book, calendar and perhaps texting, safe stuff like that sounds good :) Even going for some of the packages that would allow you to use the phone as your internet access for emailing and web-browsing might be worth avoiding for now until you work out the costs involved and download/upload speeds! Oooo i like the look of "sugarplum" tho!

Thanks for asking this question. It's almost tempting me to get my ancient but once proud top-end mobile out of it's dustcovers ;)
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
