I can't play games after I have downloaded them

Asked by Wreckmob

I am new to this Ubuntu Linix thing. I believe I have 8.04 Hardy or something. And i have wine downloaded and added to my toolbox. I can open and use Rhythmbox and Limewire. My Firefox is working correctly. But everytime I download things i can't use them. For instance, I have downloaded Adobe flash at least 5 times and nothing happens. I have also downloaded Neverball and Urban Terror but when i try to open them it opens as a Archive folder i think. It shows the contents of the game in subfolders. I need help with my games and Adobe flash. PLEASE HELP A NEW AND DESPERATE GUY!

Hey Dude,

     For the Flash Player,

Basically Ubuntu supports .deb files where as for Windows it supports .exe files. So If you want to install Flash Player just search for Adobe Flash Player.deb

     For Games,

I don't think you can play games through wine. You need to install a package called as cedega. For more information on it go to www.cedega.com

Good Luck!!

You need to install Direct X which is necessary for almost all games.

Noooo, don't install directX in Wine. Here lookok up how to get individual Windows programs working in Linux using the search features on the Wine website
http://appdb.winehq.org/
http://www.winehq.org/

But better still why not try native linux games?? lol . Go up to the top taskbar and click on

System - Administration - Synaptic Package Manager

it asks for your normal user password, not your SuperUser/Root one and doesn't reveal stars to give-away how long your password is ;) then use the Search button to look for "game" or something. I recommend Wesnoth & Glest but i don't really like fps's like Alien Arena (Quake stuff is just not my cuppa tea at all) I really haven't explored linux games much at all but somewhere in the Solved Answers is a great list of good site worth trying, if you can find the answer that's a few months old now
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

S.Vikash Koushik : users should not install DirectX in wine manually. It is already built-in. If they need additionnal .dll files, they should install them with winetricks : http://wiki.winehq.org/winetricks

Also, when you recommand a proprietary and non-free (in any sense of the term) piece of software, please state it clearly.

Wreckmob : Regarding the problem of .exe files opening with the archive manager, right click an .exe file, and go to properties. Then, choose to open it with Wine instead of Archive Manager.

Regarding the fact that you publicly claim to be downloading Spore, i'm having a hard time trying to find a country where it is legal. Launchpad is a legal website, with legal activities, and with people who give some of their free time to legally help other people doing legal things. I hope you understand you're in the wrong place here.

Launchpad does not mean to endorse copyright infrigement.

Look, i don't think the chap was trying to break copywrite deliberately. In the Windows world it's practically impossible to avoid being a "bad boy" in some way. Often they make you feel like you are being bad even if you are a legitimate user. The chap didn't say that he hadn't got a legitimate right to use the game, perhaps the Cd he bought just was unusable or something. It's possible. It's also possible that although he said he was using a particular game that perhaps he was just getting caught up in the chat here and has never downloaded anything ever. Again it's possible.

I think all that was really required here was to show how to install and use Linux equivalents and avoid Windows stuff where possible, and also it was good that people gave some help on how to use Windows stuff in linux.

We can't assume that everyone is guilty. We are not judge or jury and shouldn't be executioner, that's for the Windows world to be like that. We don't need to get caught up in the stupid security issues that certain other companies would have us play.

Good luck and chill out people :)
Regards all from
Tom :)

One more thing, you need to install the accelerated drivers for your video card or pretty much all games, Linux native or through Wine/Cedega, will not work. The lack of those drivers is likely why you got that "Direct X is unavailable" message.

Oh yeah, almost forgot. Spore is available for download as a demo from Cedega, that is likely what he was doing, not stealing a copy of Spore.
