I'm fairly new myself but I'll give this a shot. Unless there is a native LINUX version of the game you're pretty much constrained to the limitations of WINE (http://www.winehq.org/) or one of the WINE varients. To the best of my understanding most newer cards work and are getting pretty descent support from the vendors but as to whether or not LINUX users are getting the full capabilities of there cards compared to windows gamers I can't say 100% (people will argue frame rates till they are blue in the face I won't get in the middle of that). Finally, as to what is it like gaming for LINUX, you can always check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_gaming and http://www.linuxgames.com/ . The WikiPedia will give you a general over view and LINUX Games will give you some resources and a few games you might try. Hope this helps.

For more information about particular games, you could look in the Application Database of Wine: http://appdb.winehq.org/ . Call of Duty 4 and World of Warcraft are in the Platinum and Gold list respectively so they should run pretty well.

Hello R4v£n,

The drivers for Nvidia cards are pretty up-to-date (about version 180.23 now), and some games run pretty well. That's the case of WOW, and COD4 is playable but not as smooth as under Windows.

Hope this helps.

R4v£n ,

If you want the situation to be improved in the next years, the best way is to post on devs's forums, put your name down on native linux games petitions, etc.

At the moment, only a few studios like idSoftware and 3D Realms actually make Linux native games on a regular basis, and this will not be improved without a big community to ask for it.

Also, you might want to try dualboot, just to can test Linux and see if it fits you for other activities than gaming ;)
