Hello Melanie,

Would you please provide the address of the site from which you tried to download your program, and also tell us which program it is ? This will help us to understand what's wrong and try to solve your problem.

Archive Manager opens if you download an archive file, like .zip or .rar. What file are you downloading? What does the link say that you are clicking on?

Why are you trying to download Wine? If you want to install Wine, you do not need to download it. What are you trying to run with Wine?

Err, Melanie, Wine is not meant to let you install Windows inside of Ubuntu, but it is meant to let you run Windows applications (ie. applications that were designed only for windows) inside of Ubuntu.

Do you want to get rid of Ubuntu completely and install Windows instead?

Do you want to split your hard drive in half and be able to run both Ubuntu and Windows?

Why does your school have Windows XP in a zip file? I'm not sure that makes sense.

What are you ultimately trying to do by installing Windows? What is your ultimate goal?

I would like to put windows xp on here but the problem is in my daughters school they have a free download of windows xp that she can have without paying for it and you have to download it in order to get it and i'm not for sure if we don't have enough room to download it or if there's something i'm not doing somewhere else to let me be able to do this...

Melanie, i ensure you that unless it is directly shipped on microsoft.com (with MSDN AA), the version you can get from your daughter's school is more than likely illegal.

You should first try to get a legal licence of Windows (by buying it, of course, but XP is only about 30 € nowadays). Then, I don't think we'll be able to help you install Windows on launchpad.net, but it's pretty simple and you should be able to find out how to do it by yourself.

If you need help with making windows applications work in Ubuntu, or general help about Ubuntu, feel free to ask us, though.

Also, i advise you to try out Ubuntu 8.10, since it's been a year and a half since 7.04 was released, and you may be missing a lot of new features and applications with such an old version of Ubuntu. And contrarily to Windows XP, getting Ubuntu 8.10 is completely free :)

You cannot make Windows "work in" Ubuntu. That doesn't make sense. Ubuntu and Windows are both operating systems, like Windows and Mac OS are two different operating systems. This explains: http://www.howstuffworks.com/operating-system.htm

Maybe you mean one of these?

* You can install both Windows and Ubuntu on your computer at the same time. You turn the computer off and back on in order to switch between them. Instructions for that are here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsDualBoot

* You could also completely remove Ubuntu from your computer and install Windows instead. If you use a Windows install CD, it will do this. (Remember that if you have any personal documents in Ubuntu, they'll be deleted, too.)

* Or maybe you mean you want to run Windows *programs* in Ubuntu. (Like you want to use Microsoft Office, for instance.) You can sometimes do this using Wine, which makes the program think it's running inside Windows instead of running inside Ubuntu.

Can you explain why you want to install Windows? Why does your computer have Ubuntu on it in the first place?

"i386" is a type of computer processor made by Intel. Most computers use them. (Apple computers used to have a different type, called "PowerPC", for instance, but now they have switched to using i386, too.) See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_80386

We can't tell you what that error message means, though, because we don't know exactly what you were trying to do when it happened. We need more detailed information.

Instructions for upgrading to Ubuntu 8.10 are here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/IntrepidUpgrades

sorry it took me so long to respond but when i tried to upgrade to ubuntu 8.10, it wouldn't let download all files just half and a window popped up and said could not download all repository indexes. The repository might be no longer available or could not be contacted because of network problems. if available an older version of the failed index will be used. otherwise the repository will be ignored. check your network connection and the correct writing of the repository address in the preferences.this is what's in the address area:
http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/feisty-security/universe/source/Sources.gz: 404 Not Found
http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/feisty/main/binary-i386/Packages.gz: 404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.88.45 80]. so is this the correct address or is there some other address i need to add these address fill the whole space up in the address area...what should i do help!! and thank you..

Download an ubuntu 8.10 cd-rom image, burn that to disc, and install from that.

Your download error for Feisty updates is because Feisty has hit end of life, see
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases

Can you help with this problem?
