Can't get any windows games to open

Asked by tinkerbell4204

I got my computer updated and they put linux Ubuntu on it. I have never heard of this and was told it was great and that i would have no problem with my windows games. I have been trying to download games from pogo, big fish and even blubster won't open. It keeps telling me that there is no application to open the file type. What can i do to get these files to open?????

UPDATE- i finally got pogo togo games to work. I got blubster t to download but i can't get it to open. And i cant get any big fish games to open says i need to be an admin. I am and i still don't know why it's happening. I also can't get yahoo messenger to open??

Also how do i change the screen size it's too big and i miss everything at the bottom or sides of the screen.

You need to install wine to play with proprietary software.

Linux does not natively run any windows exe files.
In order to run windows files you will have to run them with a compatibility layer called Wine.

http://www.winehq.org/

To install wine in Ubuntu

Please first enable the universe repository:

Open System → Administration → Software sources → [ Tab Ubuntu software ]
enable "Community Maintained open source software (universe)"
Close and confirm the repository reload.

Then open a Terminal from the menu Applications → Accessories → Terminal and type:

sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install wine

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

Then there are a lot of howto on the net:
http://www.simplehelp.net/2007/05/18/how-to-install-windows-programs-in-linux-using-wine/
http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/wine
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Wine

Hope this helps

I'm sure here you will find the answer related to Wine https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/wine

Who did this evil thing to you? They are the ones that should face this question!

That said, I have the ubuntu package for wine-1.1.15 installed from winehq.org,
and it didn't have the "no application to open the file type" problem.

What version of Wine are you using? And what version of Ubuntu?
(You can tell which Wine by doing wine --version in a terminal
window.)

Word Whacker from pogo works great *if* you don't use the menu item
to run it; you have to navigate down to the game's .exe to run it,
and you have to install Flash. If the game doesn't install flash for you,
you can do it with "winetricks flash", see http://wiki.winehq.org/winetricks

When your macine switches on is there a menu that says

Ubuntu (lots of nubers and letters)
Ubuntu (lots of nubers and letters)
memtest
Other Operating Systems
Windows (Xp or something)

It'll probably only be there fairly briefly and just before the orange (or blue) bar but we could help you change that so it's a lot easier. If the menu doesn't appear to be there we might still be able to find something but it'd be trickier. It just depends how mean they were.

Things that are great when you choose them are unwelcome when they are forced on you. Hopefully we can help you get your own back by either becoming an Ubuntu Whizz or by finding a hidden Windows in there somewhere if it's there. I'm hoping for a little bit of both ;)

Regards and good luck from
Tom :)

Hello tinkerbell4204,

For Yahoo ! Messenger, i'm not sure but i think you can login to your Yahoo account with Pidgin Instant Messenger (which is installed by default on Ubuntu).

About your screen size, i suppose you mean the screen resolution. You should first check that you activated your graphics card peripherals (System -> Administrations -> Drivers of peripherals, check that the drivers for your ATi or Nvidia card are activated. If you have an Intel card, it will already be working without this to be needed). Then, you need to go to System -> Preferences -> Screen resolution, and set it to a bigger one (usually the biggest available is the one that best fits your screen).

For the games, it would be easier for us to help you if you can give us the exact names of the games, and the exact error messages you get.

Cordially, SD.

Hello,

If you dislike Pidgin, you should also try GAIM, which supports the Yahoo protocol.
There is a native version (http://in.docs.yahoo.com/messenger/download/unix.html) but Yahoo didn't update it since ages, feel free to mail them and ask them why ;)

About FarmCraft, i found one (here : http://www.reflexive.com/FarmCraft.html) that seems to install. The problem with the other one comes from their installer that tries to guess wether your Windows XP/Vista account is admin or not (and we both know you're not using an xp/vista admin account since you're using Wine :p).

Hope this helps.

For the record, that Big Fish installer problem is http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15755
(Kudos to Steve for finding the workaround for the user.)

Yes, i agree with Dan there.  I'm not entirely sure i'd like people like that to have my email address tho!

Please could you do me a favour and lets have a look see if we can get Windows working on your machine?  I don't normally like helping with Windows problems but feel that we owe it to you in this case.  Please go up to the top taskbar and click on

Applications - Accessories - Terminal

into the terminal window type

cd /boot/grub
dir
sudo cp menu.lst menu.lst.250209

it asks for the normal user password - the one you use at login, when you switch the machine on.  If you don't know it then please let us know and we can help you fix that.  Assuming you're still ok then continue in the terminal window with

dir
gedit menu.lst.250209

and copy all the stuff that's in there into a reply to us here so that we can have a look and try to get you back into Windows properly.

I'm still hoping that these people haven't been really really mean but it's difficult to tell as they have been completely outrageous.  Normally when we get a machine we have no choice about what Operating System we get and that isn't fair but i thought Ubuntu users were a bit better than that kind of bad behaviour.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

One great thing about Pidgin is supposed to be that you can be happily chatting with different people on different things like MSN Yahoo and so on but all through just the one interface.  Annoying though if you don't like the interface and i hope that Gaim looks better for you.

Good luc and regards from
Tom :)

lol, i like the way that launchpad janitor automatically blocked Dan's email address there.  you'll have to try finding his profile page in here and contact him from there.

I have tried every suggestion on here and none worked. I have finally found the solution:
