Alternative to Evolution?

Asked by oss_test_launchpad

My company works with an older MS Exchange server and I have to use its functions (esp. schedule appointments, compose emails, read emails, organize contacts).

I have been trying around with Evolution for a year now (using the OWA connector) but its performance was extremely buggy, and several bug reports filed in launchpad have received more than little attention. Therefore I would like to know if there is a native working alternative to Evolution. If not I will have to use Windows again.

Hello,

Unfortunatly, native linux clients for Exchange protocols are very young still for reasons I won't debate here. If you Exchange client is mandatory, then I fear there no solution for you yet.

Perhaps dual-boot systems will allow you to retain some of the advantages of Ubuntu while still being able to use Windows for some things.

For emailing i'd try Thunderbird but it doesn't cover all the other bases you need covered

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

As an Email client there is an alternative. Thunderbird. But Thunderbird doesn't support schedule appointments,. So I'm not sure if it helps.

Thank you all for this information. Thunderbird is no alternative since it does not support Exchange servers, right?

One alternative might be to try running "MS Exchange server" in Wine. Thunderbird only has some of the functionality you are looking for sadly

http://winehq.org/

and look up how other people have got it working by looking through the Wine Applications database

http://appdb.winehq.org/

I only got this far as i didn't know which version of MS Exchange server you need to use

Good luck and happy hunting from

The SERVER is 2003, but you probably mean can I run the CLIENT (named "Outlook") under Ubuntu. You can use Outlook 2003 as well as Outlook 2007 with a 2003 MS Exchange server.

As to http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&iId=34, Wine is not usuable as it does not feature setting up an email account in Outlook.

Hello,

If you can't run Outlook under Wine, then there is only one solution left : using Windows.

Yet, if you don't want to bother yourself with it for every single task, and don't want either to have to reboot your PC each time you wanna send an email, you should have a look at VirtualBox, in order to run Windows inside Ubuntu.

See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/VirtualBox.

Hmm looks like only one person has tried it out and didn't try many tricks to get it all working. If you have more success then please add your feedback into that Wine section. I'd expect more success with Outlook 2003 than 2007 but i try to avoid Windows stuff and Wine.

Even Codeweavers seem to have had trouble getting this to work "out of the box". It might be worth getting your boss to pay for Codeweavers-Linux tho as the last report i read about them was in conjunction withe Win 0.95.1 or something and we're now on 1.1.5 i think. Seems like they were putting a lot of effort into getting this particular package to work easily. Although at £25 (£55 for the advanced version) of Codeweavers compared to £100 for Windows i can only imagine which your boss would prefer you to have.

Somewhere it was saying that "Kontact" might be good but that's a KDE program so it'd be quite heavy i think.

Good luck with this

Brilliant, nice one Steve. Running it in a Virtual Machine has got to be the best way forwards. Please ignore my last post :)

Yes, it works with Crossover Office. CO is to be installed via an installer, so I'm not quite sure if it will survive a distribution upgrade. Also, updating Outlook within CO does not seem to work. And: It's pretty slow.

PS Here: http://www.novell.com/products/desktop/features/evolution.html is says that Evolution DOES connect to MS Exchange 2007 but they don't say how. The Novell guys don't seems to bother to answer questions like this one: http://forums.novell.com/novell-product-support-forums/evolution/357189-exchange-2007-a.html. This is really sad.

The Novell guys sound like a good bunch to have a rant at. When i'm 'having a go' at hardware manufacturers or games industry people i tend to go straight to their "Contact Us". Sometimes i try to be polite and sometimes i just open up and 'let rip'.
http://www.novell.com/company/contacts-offices/

I had a hunt around for a specifically Evolution forum but ended up with all kinds of weird stuff as i had to go through google as i haven't got room to install Evolution on this machine. I have a feeling that the "Help" menu will probably just link in to here.

Don't be shy and good luck with this

If you are still having trouble with this then please post it as a new question. Only the most recent questions tend to get looked at so posting/reposting a question just before america arrives online after work/school gives the best chance of getting a good few answers.
