Getting a error when I try to load my sons UBFUNKY software

Asked by Terry

I just installed Ubuntu 8.1 and I was trying to load my sons UBFUNKY software from the software CD and I am running into the following errors.

1) Autorun will not and I get the following error: "An error occurred while loading the archive."

When I click on command line output:

[/media/cdrom0/Autorun.exe]
End-of-central-directory signature not found. Either this file is not
a zipfile, or it constitutes one disk of a multi-part archive. In the
latter case the central directory and zipfile comment will be found on
the last disk(s) of this archive.
note: /media/cdrom0/Autorun.exe may be a plain executable, not an archive
zipinfo: cannot find zipfile directory in one of /media/cdrom0/Autorun.exe or
/media/cdrom0/Autorun.exe.zip, and cannot find /media/cdrom0/Autorun.exe.ZIP, period.

I tried running just the setup.exe program but I got the same error.
How do I get by this error so I can load my software.

I surmise that this is Windows software that you're trying to install on Ubuntu, given that you're trying to run what appears to be a Windows installer.

This is about analogous to you putting diesel in a petrol car and being surprised that it doesn't work. Ubuntu is *not* Windows and so (excepting for smoke and mirrors) you should not expect Windows software to work by default on Ubuntu. There is however a software package for Ubuntu called "WINE" that allows you to run some/many Windows applications on Windows (which is the aforementioned smoke and mirrors.)

What's the CD meant to do? Is it a game, drivers, utility software or what? If your son is going to need to run many games or software that is heavily Windows centric he may have to use Windows instead of Ubuntu.

UBFunkys is an interactive game that uses little characters that dock into a USB port. Unfortunately the software is not compatible with windows vista 64 so I loaded Ubuntu to see if it would work.

Menu : Applications--->Add/Remove...
select in the box "All maintained by Canonical " ---> " All avaliable applications ",
type in search " Wine " , select " Wine " from the list, click on " Apply " button.

Hi,

Please follow this guide for instructions on how to manually install software in Ubuntu:

http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Intrepid#Ubuntu_Package_Installation_and_Updates

As you can see, there are several ways to manually install software in Ubuntu. The wine application can be installed using each of these methods.

Mark

I hope you have some success with Wine, but if Windows Vista won't run the game then it's unlikely that Wine will. Microsoft is more likely to be compatible with Microsoft than a 3rd party. Generally a good reference for whether (and how well) a given Windows application will run, is the Wine AppDB, here: http://appdb.winehq.org/ They also post work-arounds if needed to get varoius software working under Wine. I see that Ubfunky appears not to be listed at all, which unfortunately doesn't bode too well...

I prefer gui ways rather than command line so maybe try this out.
Go up to the top taskbar and click on

System - Administration - Synaptic Package Manager

try using one of the search tools (i prefer the button) to look for Wine
In the list it gave me, Wine was right down at the bottom.

Once installed you'll find many Windows programs quite easy to install but some need a bit of research on the Wine website if they don't work first time. Wine is fairly easy to setup as Xp overall but then allows individual programs to be run as though with different versions of Windows such as Win98 or even Win95. So it allows greater flexibility in running Windows programs than Windows does! (ie very backwards/forwards compatible)
http://winehq.org/
http://appdb.winehq.org/

I tried looking up UbFunky in the Wine database but couldn't find it so hopefully that means its easy to run (otherwise it means no-one else has reported trying it out yet) lol

Going back to Synaptics Package Manager you might find it worth searching around in there for educational games - Ubuntu had so many that it brought out a special edition of Ubuntu called Edubuntu!

Good luck with all this
Regards from
Tom :)

The simplest way to install Wine (in Gutsy or later) is to click this link: http://tinyurl.com/installwine

(Clicking it loads an AptURL, which should tell your package manager to download and install the Wine package.)

Ahah, now i've read the second line i feel a little safer, sorry Endolith. I still think it's better to learn how to use Synaptic" or "Add/Remove Applications" so that it's easier to deal with issues in the future. Also both show the range and diversity of what's on offer for free as an alternative to trying to stick with Windows stuff in a much less paranoid (but safer) world

Good luck, thanks and regards from

It's completely safe. It doesn't even download anything. It just instructs Synaptic to add the Universe repository and install the package like it normally would. You get prompts asking you for permission before it does anything.

(apt:wine?section=universe is the actual URL, but it doesn't create a clickable link when I type it here. http://appnr.com/install/wine is supposed to do the same thing, but there's a bug that prevents it from working correctly.)

Well installing Wine allowed me to start the installation however the
software package wants to install itself on the c: drive verses the

Just let it install to the "C: drive". It will actually be installing to a location like /home/username/.wine/drive_c/

Vista has nothing to do with it if you're running Ubuntu. Sounds like it's actually working in Wine, and the program just doesn't like your computer. Maybe the program isn't compatible with 64-bit machines?

Just a little word about wine 32/64 bit.

Everything is 32bits in wine. By default, it emulates WinXP 32 bits, even on 64 bits systems. Wine 64 bits just won't run anything but notepad.exe so far (and is under active development).

What would help is that you launch the software in command line, and paste the output errors here (so we might be able to spot the problem).

In order to run it in command line, open a terminal (Applications, Accessories, Terminal), move to the install directory (use the command "cd" : for instance, "cd .wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/<name of the install folder>". Just type the first letters of the folder's name and hit the key "tab", it'll automatically complete the name. If it doesn't, press "tab" again and you'll have a list of folders beginning with the letters you already typed). When you're in the folder, type "wine <programname.exe>", and then just try to use it, once it's crashed, paste the whole output here and we'll be able to have a look.

My thanks to all of you who contributed information. At this point I have
removed ubuntu from the system it like other software just does not seem to
be able to get around the 64 bit operating system. I cannot even get
windows XP pro (32bit) to load as a dual boot on the system.

Thanks again for all your help. I think I may load Ubuntu on my old system,
the one I took out of service, so that I can experiment with it there.

They have not fixed the driver issue yet for Ubfunkeys and Vista 64. All
they will say is that they are working on it however in the mean time there
are quite a few upset parents out there with hundreds of dollars worth of
toys that their kids cannot play. If any of you have ever tried to explain
to a five year old why his game will not play then you understand how
frustrating it is.
