Using Wine to Run VersaCheck

Asked by Marcus

I have been trying to use VersaCheck using Wine. The program will start but when I go to print blank checks I get the error "Cannot focus a disabled or invisible window" I'm not sure what that error means. I've made sure the required font is in the windows directory under wine but that did not work.

I've identified two Linux programs (Free Check & Makecheque) that look like the would be good replacements for printing blank checks to use in GnuCash but the information on installation & configuration is spotty & and I need to print blank checks by this Friday to pass the money along.

If anyone can provide help either with getting VersaCheck to print blank checks using Wine or installing & configuring either Free Check or Makecheque I would greatly appreciate the help! (my windows machine running W2K recently crashed after running windows update & I haven't been able to get it up. Running Versacheck on it was the last app that I needed to migrate)

Thanks All!

Hmm

according to this

http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=11618

rating is garbage means its incompatible with wine

maybe you can try your luck with a different emulator

Try installing those other programs and see if you can make sense of them without the manuals. There's probably help available from the Help menu (unlike in Windows, there are usually a lot of options in there that actually do things)

Also reading a tiny part of the Wine page i noticed that you have to work at getting the dependancies to make the program work so try
System on the top taskbar - Administration - Synaptic Package Manager (near the end of the list). It'll ask for your user password (not the root/superuser one)

Click on "Mark All Updates" and click "Apply"

Hmmm, i noticed that there were a few instructions at the bottome of the Wine page for Versa-Check but it's an old page and it doesnt look like anyone has tried the program with recent versions of Wine. Try following the instructions at the bottom of ...

http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=11618

Notice at the top of the page it says "What does not [work] ... Printing checks does not appear to work." However you might well have more luck as few people have tried (just 1 person i think) and that was ages ago with an ancient version of Wine.

I just did a search for accounting packages in the local repositories and found

eGroupWare - looked like an all-in-one package, wasnt specific
sql-ledger - mentioned having templates for printing checks

Generally its better to look for a native linux equivalent of packages you use. Free Software often tends to be better and finding&installing it using
Applications - Add/Remove Programs
or
Administration - Administration - Synaptic Package Manager
makes it much easier to handle. Sadly in this case it looks like you might have to find something commercial, unless you speak spanish - there's an excellent package called Bulmacont but i'm not sure it's been translated. Usually stuff in the repositories has many different language options but this seemed to suggest that it might be just in Spanish.

I typed "VersaCheck linux" into Google and got a few responses but didn't really know what i was looking for and didn't want to download anything. It's worth try.

Oh in the package manager i also found a couple of hoiusehold accounts programs:-

Eqonomize
Grisbi

Good luck and happy hunting

Wine stands for
Wine Is Not an Emulator
but its just technical semantics that basically boils down to the fact that Wine is faster than emulators as its more integrated into Linux rather than being another layer on top.

Hello,

I think you should try FreeCheck (even if it's a command line tool it seems to be doing what you need. I don't really have the time to help you use it right now, but if there's anything you don't understand with it, just ask here and i'll (try to) have a look at it tonight.

Ok, i found it with Google and found these pages

http://www.sunbirds.com/support/ -see down at the bottom about fonts
http://sandeen.net/freecheck/download/ - which leads to the download
http://sandeen.net/freecheck/download/freecheck-0.30.tar.gz

Note this last line will immediately start the download. Hopefully the fonts will be included in the package - otherwise lookup the first link i gave there.

Usually it's possible to get help on running a command lne package by typing --help after it so i would type

freecheck --help

Good luck with this

If you haven't had much luck with this then maybe you'll need to set up a dual-boot with Xp or something. Ideally when setting up a dual-boot the Windows part would go on first but if you look about halfway - 2/3rds of the way down the page you'll see how to deal with issues that arise when you add a Windows part to an existing Linux install.

I tend to find it's better to have a dual-boot rather than commit entirely to Ubuntu mainly because it's taken me many years to build up all the knowledge i have about Windows systems and i've only been using Linux a few months and only for a very few things. Although i have learned a lot i still imagine there are things i could do more easily in Windows. I know the answers are out there in linux but i don't already know them and on a short time-table that makes a big difference. In a dual-boot system both Lnux and Windows suddenly become a lot more powerful and able to escape disaster or deal with problems much more easily than a single boot on either would bring. Office apps and web-browsing is much easier and far far safer in linux.

Good luck with this and sorry we haven't been able to fix it in the time required
Many regards from
Tom

Thanks to all who responded to my request!

In summary:

I was only using Windows to run VersaCheck to print checks as I have fully migrated to Linux (Ubuntu). After running microsoft's upgrade (on 1-15-09) my windows partition failed to run (& I needed to print checks!). Eventually I was able to restore the windows partition & print checks. But I started to look for a Linux replacement for VersaCheck. I've identified two, Free Check & Makecheque. I am going to check both of these programs out and report back. Hopefully GNUCash will consider incorporating a check printing plugin in a future release.

Again thanks to all who responded to my question. I greatly appreciate your taking time to pass on your knowledge.

Hello,

You should definately contact the GNUCash devs and give them links to freecheck and makecheque. This'll help them notice there's a demand for such feature, and thus they'll be more likely to work on it.
