If you want to install microsoft office 2003 in ubuntu, you must install wine for windows emulator before ...

if you never install it

open your teminal, type this

Type sudo apt-get wine

After installing wine, explore your Microsoft office cd, just double click setup.exe (or anything else)

Microsoft Office will not run on native Ubuntu (or any other Linux), although it is possible that it may run under Wine on Linux, I have not tried it.

Ubuntu comes with OpenOffice by default, which is a very reasonable substitute for Microsoft Office (except for Database, which is not very robust as a replacement for Access). OpenOffice will read and write files in many formats, including Microsoft Office formats.

So, I recommend that you give OpenOffice a try. But if you just must have Microsoft Office, you will need to install it on a Windows machine or a Mac.

OpenOffice.org is a supported application in Ubuntu and you can install OpenOffice also on your Window pc.

So you can exchange openoffice OpenDocument data without any issue http://www.openoffice.org/

To get better fonts compatibility from Windows and Ubuntu document please install the msttcorefonts package in Ubuntu.

It is usually better to try finding a native linux equivalent rather than trying to force linux to be Windows. I have grown used to (and fond of (in a love-hate way)) Microsoft Office over the many years that i have been using it and was wary to 'start learning a whole new package'. Imagine when i finally did set aside some time only to find that it's almost identical. Certain things are a little different but i hadn't used those features much before. OpenOffice is much more intuitive and is actually easier to use than M$ Office! I wish i'd started using it years ago.

At the start i had to use Tools menu from the top menus to change the Options such as Load/Save options and VBA Properties to make everything defaults to M$ formats. Since then i haven't had to do anything quite so complicated and don't even need to use 'Save As...' instead of save. When i email documents most people assume i'm still using M$ Word/Excel.

Curiously i now feel much freer. Especially with all the help that's available for free. I blush when i think of the amount of money that bosses have squandered over the years and the amount of money we wasted on tech support when we could have been using this.

Thinstalled Portable Ms ( Microsoft ) Office 2003 Pro SP3 runs in Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty

After installing wine software in Ubuntu 9.04 ( www.ubuntu.com ), right click office2003.exe (181 MB) file downloaded from

and select Open with wine.

Small "loading Start.exe" screen appears in lower right corner. A small button like icon appears in top right corner and right click that to open word / excel / powerpoint. Home folder is automatically considered as My Documents.

The following setting is needed for Word to start and close without showing any error about Normal.dot file. After opening Word, select Tools, Options, File Locations, User templates, Modify. Then select My Documents and click OK.

After exiting Word / Excel / Powerpoint, right click the button like icon that appears in top right corner and select "Exit Office", so that Word / Excel / Powerpoint can be run once again without any error message.
