How can I add non-ubuntu related CDs to my computer

Asked by Ellen

I am brand new to Ubuntu, having used Windows XP previously. I only have Ubuntu as an operating system on this computer but I have non-ubuntu CDs of favorite games and other software that I would like to install. Is there anyway I can do this? Every time I try to install a CD, and click on "auto-run" the computer can't find "auto-run" because it's not listed as a ubuntu application. Is there a way to install software that is not ubuntu or Linix orientated?

If you are asking if you can run windows software on Ubuntu the short answer is no. Ubuntu is a Linux distribution and is completely different from windows (kind of like how mac isn't windows).

The long answer is that some windows software can run via a program called WINE that kind of tricks the software into thinking it's on windows. Whether or not your games, etc will work is more an trial and error thing. You can check the wine database for more info on specific apps. http://www.winehq.org/

However, the best approach may be to simply embrace the multitude of Linux apps that are now available to you.

Thank you for that information. The software that I really want to add is a series of templates for making covers, spines and labels for CDs and DVDs that I have burned. The software that I have is for either Windows or Mac...it doesn't say anything about Linux or any of its programs. Is there an application on Ubuntu that allows for templates for jewel cases and DVD cases and makes labels for the discs?

To install wine

Please first enable the universe repository:

Open System → Administration → Software sources → [ Tab Ubuntu software ]
enable "Community Maintained open source software (universe)"
Close and confirm the repository reload.

Then open a Terminal from the menu Applications → Accessories → Terminal and type:

sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install wine

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

Then there are a lot of howto on the net:

.... "Is there an application on Ubuntu that allows for templates for jewel cases and DVD cases and makes labels for the discs?..."

Why you don't try OpenOffice
Applications → Office → OpenOffice Writer

There are a lot of templates to write labes also for cd...

http://documentation.openoffice.org/Samples_Templates/User/template/index.html
http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/free-download-openofficeorg-blank-templates.html
http://www.worldlabel.com/Pages/openoffice-templates.htm
http://www.worldlabel.com/Pages/openoffice-template.htm

But i strongly suggest you to use the good glabels package...

Please first enable the universe repository:

Open System → Administration → Software sources → [ Tab Ubuntu software ]
enable "Community Maintained open source software (universe)"
Close and confirm the repository reload.

To install it please open a Terminal from the menu Applications → Accessories → Terminal and type:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install glabels

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

You will find glabels under Applications → Office → glabels Label designer

Hope this helps
