New Xubuntu User: Wireless Card, .exe files

Asked by Bionicjoey

Loaded Xubuntu 8 on an old IBM T22 Laptop. (Ubuntu kept hanging...think it was a ram issue).
Really like the look and feel of Xubuntu and being off Microsoft on at least 1 machine.
I'm not a tech and very new to Linux...I need some step by step user support.

3 issues that I need help with:
1. Laptop has a 30 gig hard drive....Xubuntu loaded ok but only recognized 20 gig
2. .exe files (loading new programs) off CD drive or a memory stick not being recognized as an executable
3. wireless PCMCIA is not working....would really like wireless internet access. DLink DWL610

Help please.

Thanks

Hi and welcome to (X)Ubuntu!

2: .exe-files are executable om Windows machines only. Some of them can work if you fist install Wine (Open a teminal, write "sudo apt-get install wine" without the "") but it all depends on how lucky you are. Generally programs in Ubuntu are all available from the "Add and remove programs" in the menu so there is usually no need to download programs from various sites on the Internet, everything is already in the "Add and remove programs"-program. What sort of program is it that you want to run?

Good luck!

Which program are you trying to run ? Might be in Ubuntu there are already valid alternatives...

Thank you

3. I don't have the exact same wireless card as you have but according to

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HardwareSupportComponentsWirelessNetworkCardsDlink

is should work. I had the same problem and the solution for me was to in Windows make sure that the card was active. It turned out that in Windows you could activate it or put it in a sleep mode, if it was put in sleep mode then Ubuntu couldn't wake it up :S Perhaps it's the same for your card, I don't know.

Good Luck!

Can you help with this problem?
