My problem is, that my net requires a setup file to run and only then I can access net through that installed file by logging in there and I can't run .exe files on ubuntu, how can i install wine without net?

Asked by sunil

I have just installed ubuntu 8.04 and I am using linux for the first time.
I am having problems in accessing .exe files. From other threads I came to know that I need to install wine for this. But all the links I got were for installing it directly on ubuntu via internet. My problem is, that my net requires a setup file to run and only then I can access net through that installed file by logging in there. And I can't run .exe files on ubuntu. How can i install wine without net?
please help

Hello Sunil:

One thing you can try out is go to a cyber cafe and download all the packages from the below site and save them on to an usb drive and install it onto your computer or if you are dual booting you can do it via windows also

http://packages.ubuntu.com/hardy/wine

Hope it helps

Hi, what exactly happens?

Open up a terminal (applications->acessories->terminal) and do (without the quotes), "wine --version". Does it say any version? Then you have wine.

If you have wine and you click your .exe file and it doesn't open, we can check the terminal output of when the application is run in wine.

For this, do (without the quotes) "cd path_to_your_exe". After you've successfully cd'ed there do:
"wine setup.exe", or any other name that your .exe file has. What happens when you do that?

Are you sure you need to run this file to connect? It may be possible to configure the connection manually.

Yes, and what does this file exactly 'have' to do?
Does it by any chance have windows drivers?

Can you help with this problem?
