Wine 1.8 was released but Xenial is still using wine 1.6

Considering that Ubuntu 16.04 will be LTS and wine 1.8 have a lot of changes and improvements, when it will be in the main repositories of Ubuntu 16.04?

I suggest you report a bug. If the bug and security fixes are significant then the package will be updated sooner.

WINE is a strange creature. A later version may not be beneficial and more applications may in fact run better on 1.6. With WINE, a later version doesn't mean the applications you want to run will have more chance of success and you should check the WINE AppDb for compatibility.

Just as an additional information:
There is a wine-development package with version 1.7 available in the standard repositories for vivid, wily and xenial
There are PPAs with different versions up to 1.9.2 (e.g. ppa:wine/wine-builds )

At least 4 games that I played only work in wine 1.7 or higher in addition many programs work better in wine 1.8 common 2 years of development between 1.6 and 1.8this is undeniable

The package wine-development for xenial currently offers version 1.9.0
