Windows 8 installation Wine problem?

Asked by Elise Potter

I recently bought the installation disc for Windows 8 (don't hate me, I want to watch netflix), but whenever I click the setup.exe icon it doesn't do anything. When I tried to open it in the archive manager, I got this error:

Archive: /media/UDF Volume/setup.exe
[/media/UDF Volume/setup.exe]
End-of-central-directory signature not found. Either this file is not
a zipfile, or it constitutes one disk of a multi-part archive. In the
latter case the central directory and zipfile comment will be found on
the last disk(s) of this archive.
note: /media/UDF Volume/setup.exe may be a plain executable, not an archive
zipinfo: cannot find zipfile directory in one of /media/UDF Volume/setup.exe or
          /media/UDF Volume/setup.exe.zip, and cannot find /media/UDF Volume/setup.exe.ZIP, period

...Does anyone know what I can do?

Not answer for your problem. Go to this site for Netflix.

Netflix

Wine is a program that will allow some, but not all, windows programs to run on Ubuntu. It is not intended to install a complete OS such as windows 8.

If all you want to do is watch Netflix try the link given above.

If you want Windows 8 however, we won't hate you you have - I use windows sometimes too, there are two options.

1. Either have a separate computer for windows or dual boot

2. Install Windows 8 inside some vitalisation software such as "Virtualbox"

If you decide to go with the link let us know how you get on. I have not tried it myself so would like confirmation that it works before recommending it to another user.

If you need advice setting up a dual boot or visualisation software we will be happy to help.

Wine will not install Windows. You can use Virtualbox for that. Wine is an abstraction layer for DirectX system calls. It is not a PC virtualization software. The link Michael provided will get netflix onto your PC.

Can you help with this problem?
