How to open an exe file sent by HMRC

I think HMRC sent me an exe file using Windows software and I cannot open it. I use Xubuntu 12.04. Is there a suitable program which runs on xubuntu that will solve my problem?

Some but not all exe files will work under Wine

You can find wine in the software centre. No guarantees but its worth a try
