Installing Norton anti-virus onto Ubuntu.

Asked by Matthew Sibley

Hello,

I fixed someone's computer by installing Ubuntu on their system (Windows was corrupted) and this seemed to fix the problem.
They recently tried to install Norton Anti-Virus and they've had trouble installing this (It displayed 'reading/finding archive files' for a long time.

I was wondering if anyone would be able to provide a good guide for installing anti-virus on the system?

Thanks in advance

1. It won't do anything as it will only scan the ~/.wine folder
2. Ubuntu doesn't need antivirus (http://librenix.com/?inode=21)

You only need AV if you are running an email server or a file server with Windows clients. Your Norton AV is for Windows, Ubuntu isn't Windows so it is of zero value to you.

Thanks for that, I realized it just after asking the question, but great to have it confirmed, so quickly as well!

If you want AV then I suggest ClamAV but otherwise you'll be fine.

Seems you are new to Ubuntu so please read the useful Ubuntu 12.04 manual http://ubuntu-manual.org/
