Another question

Asked by Mick S

Good evening,

Can someone tell me what this means please.

"Open the terminal, and cd into the directory where the .EXE is located."

It is the context in which cd is used that is unfamiliar.

I can open the terminal but is cd an abbreviation or some kind of code.

Thanks

Mick

yes, its the command to (c)hange (d)irectory. It also works in Windows. So if you want to manipulate the files on your desktop easily you would run:

cd ~/Desktop

for example. What are you trying to install??

I need to read more about this terminal but not much time at the moment.

I'm trying to install Page Plus X5. When I searched in the forum for programs that would run in Linux I discovered Page Plus X5 would but now I can't find the page that told me that.

Tried with playonlinux and just with wine and not having much joy just yet. I think it's because with such a limited understanding I'm handicapped from the start. Programs load dead easy in windows but there is obviously a knack to getting windows programs to run in Linux. Now I know what CD is I am navigating to where the .exe file is but when I double click it I get:-

The file '/home/mick/.wine/dosdevices/c:/Program Files/PagePlus X5/setup.exe' is not marked as executable. If this was downloaded or copied form an untrusted source, it may be dangerous to run. For more details, read about the executable bit.

I clicked the link about executable bit but at this stage don't understand what it's telling me.

I posted recently that I managed to get most parts of Lotus working but goodness knows how I managed it. If you asked me I couldn't tell you. I started with a PC at age 50 and now 11 years on all I know has been self taught. Wish I'd know about Linux 10 or so years ago.

Gets a gold rating so there will be a few issues. What does the app do?

You will need to run:

chmod +x /home/mick/.wine/dosdevices/c:/Program\ Files/PagePlus\ X5/setup.exe

To satisfy the error you got.

Can you help with this problem?
