hal.dll

Asked by martinhogan

When I start my pc, I get the message:
 windows root\system\hal.dll
not found, install and press any key to continue

Pressing a key causes my system to reboot and after a few attempts, it starts normally or lists options for safe, normal, last known config etc.

Any ideas why I get the hal.dll missing message and how to clear it up?

regards

as the prior user stated, this is a location for ubuntu and linux support. You would be better suited asking windows based questions in a different channel.

when you search google.com, there are lots of links regarding your issue and how to fix it.

Thanks for your comments. I don't have Windows installed, only ubuntu, so I was wondering why this message appears?

Also, without windows installed, I'm not sure how the windows forums will be of value.

Maybe Windoze was preinstalled and still has something left of it's recovery partition?
Not sure how wine is involved with hal.dll, but maybe Wubi.

my apologies

did you use wubi to install? or did you use a cd with an ISO?
when the pc boots, do you get a grub menu giving you different boot options, maybe an option for windows?

the wubi (windows ubuntu installer) page has some information regarding hal.dll

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WubiGuide#Windows_Missing_hal.dll

"
Windows Missing hal.dll

You can get this error if you are using Windows XP and you've manually edited the file C:\boot.ini or you've deleted the C:\wubildr.mbr file. If you've deleted the C:\wubildr file then you should be able to boot Windows normally, in which case simply copy \ubuntu\winboot\wubildr.mbr back to C:\wubildr.mbr (also copy the wubildr if it is missing).

If you've manually edited the file and it is corrupt or missing then you will not be able to boot Windows. See the following link on how to fix: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/330184
"

this page, https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RecoveringWindows
also has some info regarding the hal message

Apologies for the late reply. I burned a cd with windows, which seemed to create an empty file as an additional boot option. With all the software loaded and a few restarts, it seems to have settled down.
