no WINE in 10.04 AMD64 no binaries

Asked by TossedSalad 999

I cannot download ANYTHING except for via Windows side of Laptop. My modem works fine in linux, my ISP does not...Juno (because it demands use of its own dialer). Impossible to manually configure net connection with this Juno crud,it will not let you. I know windows well, but zip about linux, hence purchased distro copy on CD. I also have dialup which stinks for downloading.

Toshiba L455d satellite laptop using Win7 (new old stock circa 2009 make). AMD64. USB fax modem (works fine tested in Knoppix, but JUNO does not and limits me to entry page on net).

I bought 10.04 ubuntu via linux central on DVD (arrived a few days ago)and am miffed that the included WINE wont work. When attempting to use WINE, theyve included a version 1.2 that calls itself BETA.....(old and not current).

When I downloaded current WINE from Lucid packages page via windows, 1.2 NON beta, it does no better, and cant install because of missing library dependancies. I downloaded some dependancies I wrote down, such as Libc6-i386, libc6, libgcc-1 etc, and all cannot install like a snowball effect wanting more and more dependancies that dont seem possible. I was at it for hours last night and dont come to an end of the demands, but just more problems (version is older than currently installed, etc, or "not possible as file you seek to install is already part of crucial operating system and cannot be up/downgraded".

Since i messed with it last night, I reinstalled entire system to be sure I didnt install anything nastily wrong or erase anything that should be there, to have a clean system tonight's try.

When re-installing 10.04 this evening, the black screen similar to checkdisk, said "skipping (invisible??) files" in four categories that ended "binary AMD" files...too fast to read and write them exactly.

All my downloading therefore HAS to be via windows as cant get on net with LINUX without WINE, to keep in mind for any advise.

When I downloaded CROSSOVER, thinking its more refined and workable than WINE that refuses to work,
(claims to work on AMD64 with my Ubuntu 10.04), same problem. Says first "needs Libc6-i386"...went and downloaded same...
installing Libc6-i386, it then refuses to install, telling me "cant satisfy dependancy libc6 (=2.11.1-Oubuntu7.7).
Libc6 2.11.1 etc is already in there.

I dont get it, I am new to Linux. It seems to be a vicious circle.
Any help out there???

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa; sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get --purge remove wine*; sudo apt-get install wine1.3

May help.

What do you need wine for?

This ignored 24hours, resubmitted question in more UBUNTU straight question format.

DONT HAVE NET CONNECTION. First step to getting LINUX accepted as an OS is to make sure
youve covered square one, which is modems, net connectivity. Even for AMD64s!

All the advice about get updates, connect to net....
USELESS. NO NET. NO WINE,=NO NET. Cannot do package server built in.

This is exactly why question resubmitted specifying same more bluntly.
