The $ sign he used was meant to represent your prompt, you don't include that.

So just try

sudo apt-get autoremove wine

Not

$ sudo apt-get autoremove wine like you did.

I have the same problem.

I have a program called AZZ Cardfile I needed to remove. I went into Wine/Programs/AZZCardfile and hit the Indelete AZZCardfile key, and then tried to reinstall the older version. No, it says it is still installed.

Then I "completely removed" wine with Synaptic but Wine was still there under the Applications menu, but all that was there was: Wine/Programs/AZZ cardfile which is the program I need removed.

I tried reloading Wine, but the program still shows. I have now reached the state where I have deleted Wine again and the program is still there.

$ sudo apt-get autoremove wine does not help in this instance.

Any further suggestions please?

And I went into the c:/ area and deleted AZZCard file there but it keeps coming back.

Wine IS uninstalled, however the link in the Applications menu is still there. This is a known bug, however there is a workaround: http://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ

5. Uninstalling applications

5.1. How do I uninstall Windows applications?

Wine has its own built-in uninstaller - the equivalent of Windows' "Add/Remove Programs" function for running standardized uninstallers. In recent versions, a shortcut has been added to Wine's menu, along with a shortcut to winecfg.

Note that Wine does not fully implement everything required to cleanly uninstall all applications. Some uninstallers might not function at all. To remove all programs installed under Wine, remove the ~/.wine directory:

rm -rf $HOME/.wine

Also the uninstaller does not remove menu and desktop entries. To remove all Wine-created menu entries run the following commands

rm -f $HOME/.config/menus/applications-merged/wine*
rm -rf $HOME/.local/share/applications/wine
rm -f $HOME/.local/share/desktop-directories/wine*
rm -f $HOME/.local/share/icons/????_*.xpm

Thanks Scott.

Here is what I did.
1. I removed Wine - complete removal.
2. I rebooted (just in case)
3. I deleted...
rm -rf $HOME/.wine
rm -f $HOME/.config/menus/applications-merged/wine*
rm -rf $HOME/.local/share/applications/wine
rm -f $HOME/.local/share/desktop-directories/wine*
rm -f $HOME/.local/share/icons/????_*.xpm
4. I checked visibly that the files had actually been removed.
5. I rebooted again, just in case.
6. I tried to re-install AZZ CardFile again
7. Again I get the message that it is still installed, although Wine does not show it installed at all.

v4 of CardFile incidentally, does not go near the Windows Registry but has an .ini file instead.

I really don't want to zap everything and reinstall Ubuntu but am thinking I have no option but to do this :-(
