Auto Run Note found when trying to load Windows Driver

Asked by articdisappearing

When I put the CD with Windows Driver for my Olympus FE-47 camera in the optical drive and select open with 'Auto-run' I get error Auto-run not found. When I open the Disc and try to open anything with either the Archive Manager or the Document viewer I am met with Error Unable to open [folder/file name].
Is there an application or workaround so I can install these drivers for my camera?

First try just plugging the camera in with a USB cable.

Or try installing the "gtkam" package to access your photos.

I just realize that I said "drivers" when I should have said software.I want to install the Olympus software from the CD. Yes Shotwell does connect but I find it a little heavy on task management and steps and I cannot find instructions that would allow deleting 'Events' in Shotwell. I also think it would be good for me to learn how to install from CD application software for third party add-ons when the CD says for Windows and Ubuntu cannot auto-run.

Then you will need to install wine, and hope it works -- to do so, install the "wine" package. It may or it may not work, you can check the wine app DB to see if anyone else has reported the state of this software (http://appdb.winehq.org/).

Windows applications are built for windows, and are usually not designed to be cross-platform, or to function anywhere but windows. (Would you expect a windows CD to autorun on a mac?)

Autorun is purposely disabled as it is a known virus and malware propagation method that has historically been very well utilised by malware authors. Untrusted software should never be run if it can be avoided.

I would strongly recommend against running windows applications under wine if you can avoid it -- wine is a "best effort" method to run software not designed for linux -- it is not tested against your particular piece of software. Shotwell is not the only game in town -- you can choose to manage the photos yourself (what I do), then use tool such as "gimp" to edit the images, or you can use other image management software such as "f-spot" or "digikam".
