I keep getting an error message when trying to run a program

Asked by Jeb E.

Every time I try to run a specific program under Wine (Rollercoaster Tycoon 3 Platinum), an error message shows up. I get these following error messages:
"Your graphics hardware or drivers do not meet the minimum requirements to run this application.

This error has also been sent to Debug.log

OK: <Attempt to continue> Cancel: <Exit>"

Then when I click "OK", I get this error message:

"The program RCT3plus.exe has encountered a serious problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

O have tried installing the graphics driver in Ubuntu directly and through Wine and neither of those help. Also, when I go to "Additional Drivers," nothing shows up.

Please help me! Thank you! :)

Jeb E.,

Which specific GPU do you have?

If you don't know it, can you try the following:

1. Open Applications > Accessories > Terminal
2. In the terminal, enter "lspci" without the quotes
3. Copy and paste the output here

I believe I have an ATi Radeon 9600 GPU, and this is what the terminal says:

Unfortunately it looks like you may be out of luck. You would probably need the proprietary driver from ATI to get the good 3D graphics acceleration required by the game. However, ATI/AMD no longer support your graphics card in their recent driver releases. Their legacy driver releases that do support the Radeon 9600 are not compatible with latest versions of Ubuntu.

Okay, well I am already thinking of making a whole new system anyways.
I will probably make a 64-bit AMD Athlon II X3 system with an ATI Radeon HD 4250 onboard graphics chip, 4 GB of memory, and a 500 GB hard drive. Sounds good enough for gaming, if you ask me!

Will the game running under Wine read the linux driver of the new system I might be building as a compatible driver??

Also, I am thinking of selling this current system. It has a Pentium 4 HT at 3.20 GHz, 3 GB of DDR1 memory, a new 500 GB hard drive, a newer Turtle Beach sound card with an additional optical output, and of course the Radeon 9600 card. How much do you think I should sell it for?

There are some test reports from running the game under Wine at http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=6648. Most of the successful results appear to be from people running NVidia graphics cards. On the other hand, that might be because NVidia cards may be somewhat more popular in the Linux circles than ATI/AMD cards (NVidia has traditionally had better Linux drivers).

There's a link to a bug report saying that someone has had the game crash on a Radeon card. On the other hand, that suggests that the game at least runs.

You could try searching the web for the something like "rollercoaster tycoon 3 wine radeon" to find out if other people have had experiences with that.

I have no idea about the selling prices of any computer hardware. Maybe you could try searching for past sales for similar hardware on eBay or something and see how much it has sold for.

Can you help with this problem?
