Left 4 Dead 2 in Wine: game won't start up

Asked by Agent1andaHalf1027

Hi, I'm having trouble getting Left 4 Dead 2 to start up. I have installed Wine and Steam and both are working. However, when I click "Play the Game" it tries to start and then the startup box just closes. Anyone able to get this game to work? I have Ubuntu 10.04.

Thanks!

Do other Steam games work? Which games work, and which don't? If Left 4 Dead 2 is the only game you've tested, it might be helpful to try another one. This looks like it might be due to http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=25256, but I'm not sure.

Ordinarily I would suggest upgrading to the beta version of Wine (http://www.winehq.org/download/deb). You might still want to try this, but if the cause is http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=25256, then that probably won't help (though it might get you the fix sooner).

Generally, yes. But in some tests it does not run OK, and exhibits errors similar to this one. It's by using that resource that I found the Wine bug that I posted about.

Hi-
@ Eliah
I haven't tried other Steam games (I don't have any), but I did update to Wine 1.3.15 and disabled gameoverlayrenderer.dll. Still no startup. However, Left 4 Dead 2 is now updating.... didn't do that before so maybe that will work. I will let you know. Thanks for the help.

Yes, please post here again when you know if that works...if not, we'll try something else.

Can you help with this problem?
