iTunes doesn't work in WINE. There is only ONE way to gt it to work and that is to install the closed source virtualbox (not the one in the default repos) and run a FULL virtualized OS and install Windows in that, then install iTunes in that. This will make your system struggle as you will be running BOTH OSes at the same time. You will however be able to access your (crappy) iPod/phone/whatever.

If you simply want to transfer songs then rhythmnbox will do it. This not only impacts fewer resources as well as being free.

@actionparsnip
http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&iId=1347 indicates that many versions of iTunes work pretty well with Wine! Also...why wouldn't VirtualBox Open Source Edition (provided by the package virtualbox-ose in the Universe repository) not succeed at running iTunes?

@Zeus
To install Wine, go to Applications > Ubuntu Software Center, type in "wine" (without the quotes) in the search box at the upper-right corner of the screen, click the search result for "Wine Microsoft Windows Compatibility Layer", and click the Install button. To attempt to install a Windows program with Wine, right-click on the installer and click Open With Wine. If you experience problems, please feel free to post again.

With that said, however, as actionparsnip suggests, there are free open source programs for Ubuntu that you can use instead of iTunes, and which will be more stable and usually lighter-weight and faster. Rhythmbox is a great application, but if you don't like that, you could try Banshee. If you want something lighter-weight (though less iTunes-style in interface), you could try Audacious. Rhythmbox is probably already installed; these other programs can be installed in the Ubuntu software center (type their names in the search box, as before).

(P.S. I'm actually not sure Audacious is lighter-weight than Rhythmbox. On my system, it uses 300 MB of RAM, when I first open it!)

I only have Ubuntu, not windows at all. I want to get iTunes to see if I can sych my iPhone. Will any of the previous help me still. Will wine or another app do this?

You should be able to sync with your iPhone using Rhythmbox.

Furthermore, I am not sure that if you get iTunes running on Ubuntu (via Wine), that you can actually use it to sync with devices. Perhaps that is what actionparsnip meant when he said that iTunes doesn't work with Wine. You could always try it and see.

Can you help with this problem?
