cannot install celtx, wine problems, sound won't launch

Asked by jenniferbrugman

So I did an upgrade to LTS and I've run into a host of problems. I had a system breakdown in the middle of the upgrade but I think the system's ok now. Many reboots and upgrades. However, the list of bugs that I can't fix are as follows: 1) sound won't launch in system/preferences. I did an alsa upgrade and removed pulse so I can hear things now but I can't change the system volume, only in interfaces. I cannot install celtx. I have done everything on the forums from the simple to complex. I cannot seem to install the in the home folder, removing grey, removing .cetlx, I try to install the ++lib in yum -- no such animal. I am at wits end. I continually get an abandoned child error.
And wine, do not even get me started. I have no windows media player because I continually get the error. UGH.
Also, I am a bit of a newb. I think I'm doing okay but honestly I feel like I am stumbling around blindly with this stuff. Help? Please?

OK, I'll address the celtx problem, and ask you about windows media

---
Celtx is not in the software centre at the moment (see following bug). Thus installing it will require a bit of effort. The "yum" command you mention is for a different operating system -- fedora linux -- so that won't work.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/99965

There are two methods for installing, first you can use a personal package archive (PPA)

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:colindean/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install celtx

You might not get a launcher icon, so you might have to use the "run-command" method (alt-f2)

Alternately, there is a devloper's preview package available, which apparently works under ubuntu (as stated on that bug), but only for amd64

Download the following file to your home folder -- its 64 bit only, so if you are not running a 64 bit machine, we can take additional (much more complicated) steps.
64 bit -> http://alioth.debian.org/~miriam/celtx/celtx_2.7+dfsg1-0inniyah1_amd64.deb

You may need to run this from a terminal, or via the run-command method.

---

What are you trying to do with windows media? Even under windows I would not recommend using that program, and would recommend much better software, like VLC (which runs under ubuntu too).

Can you explain why you want to install windows media player -- it might be that ther eis another way to do what you want...

Okay, so I downloaded that file but it's telling me I have the wrong architecture. However, I have an AMD Athlon X2 64, which it so plainly says on the little sticker on my laptop. I tried the first suggestion also but it keeps telling me it cannot find celtx. I am probably doing something wrong as I am a newbie.

I hate to keep buggin ya'll but I have five scripts on this laptop that I cannot open without celtx.

I have an HD Flip (Christmas present) and I would like to try to use the editing software that comes with the camera, which requires windows media player. I have Pititv, but I've found that when it comes to editing the simpler the software the better.

You have probably installed the 32 bit version of Ubuntu, instead of the 64 bit, so you'll need the 32 bit version of the package or install Ubuntu x64.

As for the video editing software, I would recommend you try and find a suitable program for Ubuntu/Linux instead of trying to run the software for Windows, as you are almost certain to run into problems that way.

I recommend taking a look at OpenShot (http://www.openshot.org/).

Can you help with this problem?
