Using wine in ubuntu

Asked by Norfolk

I have installed Ubuntu 10.10 in a fresh 8GB partition on my hard drive. I am very impressed with performance and speed of Firefox and Evolution Mail, so much so that I would like to do away with Windows Vista altogether.
To do this, there are certain Windows programs that I must have, namely Photoshop 7 and Internet Explorer. (I need IE to do online web pages).
I found out that I needed to install WINE, which I have done, but when I go to the WINE configuration utility under the DRIVES tab, it does not see my CD-ROM.
I have gone through the procedure to correct this but to no avail. When I put an installation CD into the drive, It does not appear on the list.
Any ideas please?
Also when I want to install IE how do I do this?
Thanks in advance.
John

One suggestion is to download the PlayonLinux utility. This is a frontend to wine which makes all necessary pre-configuration for listed programs to work.

there is a free alternative to photoshop called as gimp, you can download it for free using the ubuntu software center, and why do you want to use IE, firefox is much safer and faster than IE, there is a plugin for firefox called as "user agent switcher" ( https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/59/ ) using it you can fool the web sites into thinking that you have IE. you can directly install exe files by double clicking on them

Theodotos,
I have installed PlayonLinux but it has made no difference at all. Thanks for the suggestion any way.
Arjun,
Yes, I have Gimp and it is very good, but does not have certain tools that I use in Photoshop.
I tried the addon you suggested but I have my website managed by Microsoft Office Live and although it fools them into thinking I'm using IE, I have now found out that they also insist that I must use Windows as an O.S.
Looks like I'm doomed to be using Windows for this!
Thanks for the help.

@Theodotos and @arjun: https://launchpad.net/~cybolic subscribed wine packet and is active. So could you associate such question to wine packet, so it will be able to have a look on such issue.

About Internet Explorer, IE6 is well supported. For IE8, it's less obvious. See:

When you insert DVD in drive, and double-click on Install.exe file icon, what happens ?
Open a terminal and run "wine /media/<CD name>/Install.exe", what are error messages ?

Arjun,
Thanks for finding that, but I'm not well versed enough in computing to understand it.
As I don't have anything running under WINE, I have now removed it, and I will use Ubuntu for internet browsing and email and start my computer in Windows for the tasks I cannot run in Ubuntu.
Vista is now so slow, the hard disk is churning away constantly, but if I avoid using it as much as possible I may find other ways round my problem in the future.
I am still hoping to do away with Windows completely.
Many thanks,
John

Delance,
When I double clicked the setup.exe I got an error message that I did not understand. The setup file had a wine glass icon associated with it, so I assumed it should have run.

I was mentioned?

Codeweaver's CrossOver supports Photoshop. It's not a free product, but by buying it you support the Wine project. They have a fully functional trial version you can download and see if your version of Photoshop works in it - not all versions are supported.

It is possible to get Photoshop running just by using Wine, but if you just want a quick and functional solution, I recommend CrossOver (if PlayOnLinux or similar software doesn't work for you).

Note that in the terminal, you can press TAB to auto-complete - e.g. "wine /media/cd<TAB>" will auto-complete the path to your cdrom drive.

Christian,
I have installed Crossover, and it has enabled me to install Photoshop in Ubuntu, however when I try to open a file in Photoshop, I am once again unable to access my CD drive or external Hard disk.
It has also enabled me to install IE7, but when I log in to do web page editing, images do not appear, but everything else is OK

Have you considered using a Virtual Machine?

I am running Windows XP in Virtual Box by Oracle-sun, in it I use Quicken and Turbo Tax, neither of which run on Linux.

Installation is relatively simple as long as you download the required files from the website. It will take a bit of research, as Sun.org was bought by Oracle and they have renamed everything.

Once installed you may install in the Virtual machine any and all Windows programs you desire.

Make sure you study the requirements as the virtual machine is just a file in a folder in Linux.

Good luck

that's a problem with running windoze based program on linux systems. access to files and folders are limited because of the way windoze works. it's not a problem with ubuntu or linux.

if you MUST use photoshop, you should keep vista for that. i have vista installed still because there aren't any ocr or fax softward available for linux.

to solve the slowness problem, have you
1) defragged your hard drive
2) cleaned out your registry of obsolete entries and defragged it
3) cleaned your cache of cookies and old websites

you can get opensource software to do all three from piriform.org

oh. forgot to mention...there's also a problem with wine, in that when running windozes programs, you can't access anything outside of the me/documents directory when opening or saving files.

as for the suggestion of installing virtualbox or vmware, it's a runabout solution that serves no real purpose. with both these software, you have to install windoze inside virtualbox and vmware then reinstall your windoze programs.

Ealthuis,
I have installed VirtualBox and after a lot of head scratching all seems to work - Thank you.
Marcus,
Over the last few months I have taken all steps possible to speed up Vista to no avail.
Thanks for your suggestions everyone, but my solution seems to be the virtual machine solution suggested by Ealthuis.

Norfolk,
If you would like more info on how I use VBox, send me an email. I have in VBox access to Windows XP disks on a different machine, something you might want to use.
