2 Hours trying to install uTorrent

Asked by Obaid Farooq

Why is it so hard to use Linux? I am trying to install uTorrent and I can't find a simple method in whole World Wide Web! Why there is not step by step tutorial to do things on Linux? It has been more than 2 hours. Why do people even use Linux? I want to curse everyone who is responsible for at the Linuxes in the world. First I though that the people who are doing this work - making free OS and everything - are extraordinarily great people. But I just realized that they just made the Operating system and they don't want to tell normal user, who was just surprised by all the efforts and wanted to switch from Windows to Linux. What's the point of this lot of trouble if people don't know how to use this Operating system. If a normal new user just want to install an application takes this much time, while that person can install uTorrent in virtually 1 click only! What's the point of Open Source. The paid applications and operating systems I far batter than these shitty applications. I would not use this damn Linux Ubuntu if I get paid 350 $ rather I will use Windows 7 and pay 350 $ for it. Please stop these crappy projects and go home and rest. It better to just do nothing than making these types of operating systems. I have wasted last 5 to 6 continuous hours on Ubuntu. I can't think of any worse wastage of my time than this. I wish the idea of trying Linux didn't cross my mind. I wish I just sat on my chair and did nothing. I wash I spent this time in a gutter. I think last few hours were most stressful time of my life. I would probably regret loosing these hours my whole life.

There is no point in doing what you doing. Please stop and let the professionals do their work, who, if charge money but provide the things worth it. You wont be able to do anything like them. You are just the bunch of sad, lonely people who have nothing better to do in this world, wasting your time, and wasting other people's time, but other people are not as useless as you are. So please stop wasting our time.

I have 1 MBit Broadband connection, I usually use JetAudio, because jet Audio couldn't be installed, I tried installing VLC Media Player, It took 2 hours to download, and I didn't even know the size of the installation package, in Windows the size of file is 18 MB and it takes 3 minutes to download and 1 minute to install at most while customization the installation options. Now I am trying to install WINE and from more than 1000 minutes, it is only downloaded 29 percent and again I don't know the size of installation.

Windows platform is a INFINITY time better than Linux. Linux Sucks!

I didn't use any open source except Mozilla Firefox and I will not use, I will not ever use any Linux based operating system, ever in my life. I have downloaded 32 different types of Linux types and Version and I think it's more than 100 GBs of data. The time I wasted, more than 15 days downloading these operating systems, I will regret.

May you all rot in hell for giving this much trouble to people.

I will never understand you people wasting your time. I am amazed to know that there are people who would dedicate their lives, for what? To create an operating system like Ubuntu? It's funny. We get this life for one time and waste it developing a meaningless operating system?

I don't know how to let all my anger out. You damn fucking insane, crazy people. You people need some really, really serious metal health care.

If I can, I'd stop you people doing all this crap! If I have resources I'd throw you people somewhere from where you will not get out.

Why on earth would you do that? Its like complaining that your petrol car won't work because you filled it with diesel.

Man, you need to read some more and write less. Ranting here might make you feel better, but ultimately achieves little more.

If you have a question, ask and we shall do our best to answer.

I used Windows based OS for more than a decade, and there is nothing I couldn't do. If I download Linux version of uTorrent, what should I do after that to install it. I think Linux is not for the people who use Windows for basic purposes, like watching movies, listening music, play games, converting videos and music. It's for people who want to do things, God know what they want to do! What is the purpose if you do something in hours, on other hand you can do it in seconds. I have pointed that I installed VLC in more than 100 minutes. Now I am back to Windows 7. Linux is like playing the toughest Video game for the first, player doesn't know what to come next and what to do next. Using Ubuntu was not something simple. I don't know what's the point in using Linux. Why would anyone want to use it. Being Open Source and is not enough. I couldn't get it to go anything right. It was hell of an experience.

For the sake of it, please tell me what to do after I download uTorrent Linux version, to install it and make it work.

Or if there's some other way installing it using Terminal or The Software Installer or the 'Wine", please post it here.

No-one gave me any answer to any of my questions or issue. If you not clear about my issues or problems, just try to tell me how to install uTorrent. It's just one of them that I have.

How is it a user friendly environment if it takes 2 hours to do something I used to do in 4 minutes. (Talking about VLC). Now please don't say that why I would need VLC when built-in Audio and Video Players installed. The Audio player which doesn't even play an mp3 file. :-D

What's the point if it takes days to configure Linux and make it ready to use for normal, daily, routine use of computers.

I install Windows and after 4 hours (at most) it is absolutely ready to do anything, anything which can be done by any computer.

I used this OS for 7 hours and I have million question.

I can write volumes on how hard it is to use Linux.

To install uTorrent you need to install wine package and then uTorrent, i think with a good network connection you can install it in less than 4 minutes...

You can use Applications→Ubuntu software center search wine and install it

Then download the uTorrent install file, navigate to the uTorrent install file right click with mouse and into properties windows made it as executable, then right click on it and select open with wine

But i repeat to you, there absolutely no reason to use windows software under Ubuntu if you like Windows please use Windows... Ubuntu is a different operative system and there are many reason (spyware and malware) to prefer Ubuntu opensource software instead of proprietary closed source software.

Okay, I am going to try.

I was really thinking of switching to Linux! because it needs a very big heart to do something and then make it available to everyone for absolutely free.

After all this, isn't it obvious that I like Windows. And I am using Windows. I just wanted to see what is Linux! Now that I have seen! I am amazed.

Linux is free, Windows is not. But when using Linux you have to do all the work to make it work the way you want, it the price you pay to make it work. And this price is much much more than the price you pay to BUY Windows. It is lot more easier to earn the money you are paying for Windows than to the work you do to make Linux work!

Hello GREAT T.

Thanks you for the comment.

I don't remember using Windows for the very first time. But I remember when I started using Windows, I was 10 years younger, didn't know anything about computers. I am now 25+, know somethings about computers. But I do remember that it wasn't this much hard at that time when I didn't know anything. You double click on a file and a songs played. Open another file and video started. Clicked on an icon and IE opening. Made my first yahoo ID, opened Yahoo Messenger, signed in, went to a chat room, started chatting. If you want to install a program, go to it's website, download, double click and voila, you started using the software right away. Everything is simple and beautiful. If I didn't know something, just consult help and support or post my question to a web forum and got my answers. I didn't know how to open a video CD (.dat) file, which I copied from a video CD. I opened IE and wrote 'how to open .dat file". I then came to know that every file needs a program to open file. I came to know about how to associate a file type to a program.

Of course I learned with the passage of time, but learning was easy 10 years earlier. Using Linux is way much harder than I expected, I didn't even expected that It'd me this much annoying to just open a Video file.

Let me tell you the story of "How I played an Audio and a Video file on Ubuntu.

I tried to open a .avi file with built-in video player, it didn't open. I was asked to search some sort of codecs, when I did, there were three codecs (type of) in the list, I clicked download and after centuries of time I was notified that downloading is failed. I tried 3 times. Usually an avi file needs codec and I tried to open an mp3 file with a built in audio player, and it didn't. What type of files an audio player opens? Why is it an audio player if it can't open audio file as simple as mp3? If it needs some sort of package to open an audio file then why the audio player is still there? Why don't the developers just remove audio player and video player and let the users install them when they can't open anything? Then I tried to install VLC, and oh boy, was it hard to install. I have to do a hell of a job to install VLC.

I don't know why am I still wasting my time here. But I think I am going to say everything I want to say and I will get out of here.

To install needed packages to play mp3 and to install vlc...

You need to have extra repositories enabled..

Please first enable the universe and multiverse repository:

Open System → Administration → Update Manager
push on the lower left "Settings..." button Software sources → [ Tab Ubuntu software ]

enable "Community-maintained Open Source software ( universe )"
enable "Proprietary drivers for devices ( restricted )"
enable "Software restrictecd by copyright or legal issue ( multiverse )"

Close and confirm the repository reload.

Then you must type only 3 rows from terminal:

sudo apt-get install vlc ubuntu-restricted-extras

give your user password if requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter

Play mp3 and video...

I installed VLC before you told me how to install it. It played Audio and Video. Please read all my posts before asking me to mark this question as answered. I selected Wine to install and it is stuck at 0 percent from last 5 minutes.

I am using Intel i3 processor 2.93 with Intel DH55TC mainboard and 4 GB DDR3 Kingston RAM. If there's some problem with my network or network drivers or my system then please tell me. Firefox downloads everything at a reasonable speed of 60 - 100 KBPs. Why Software Installer is not even working now.

There's a uTorrent version for Linux, I think it can be installed without Wine. And I don't want to use wine. I don't want to use Closed Source programs on Linux. But I do I get to install that version? If I install uTorrent Linux version, I am going to mark this question as answered. Please don't ask me to do it before I get my questions answered.

P.S.

Software Centre is not downloading anything. i tried many apps but everything stucks at 0 percent.

I have a utorrent-server-3.0-23090.tar.gz file. How do I get to install it.

"Software Centre is not downloading anything. i tried many apps but everything stucks at 0 percent."

Under ubuntu software center>edit>softwarerepositories>select closest server to you or you can select other and then select best server. After that you should have your max download speed. You can try Deluge torrent client or Ktorrent if you dont like Transmission. Most apps you will need you can install if you go to the system>administration>synaptic package manager. If you still want to install Utorrent-server here you have guide http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?pid=545388
