install office 2007

Asked by Doja

I want to install MS Office 2007 using wine, and need the MS app to work on this environment.

Version of Ubuntu is 10.4

Version of wine is from PlayOnLinux 3.8.6

currently my system does not allow the CD to be installed.

I am looking for a good step by step process to install, if one exists.

You never said which version of wine. Office 2007 only gets a silver rating which means it should be ok with a LOT of work, or some features may cause issues.

1. why do you "need" ms office to work?
2. there's no version 10.4. it's 10.04!
3. ms office 2007 supposedly works on wine version 1.3, which is available in the software repository. give that a try instead of playonlinux.
4. how does your system not allow you to install the cd?

Or install virtualbox-ose and then create on a virtual-pc and install Win on it ( new registration is needed ).
In this way you will have Linux and Windows working at the same time.

I cannot find wine version 1.3. I only have 1.2 available in the software repository.

does anyone have a link to download?

also... when I try to run the exe file on the CD this message appears:

The file '/media/Office 2007/setup.exe' is not marked as executable. If this was downloaded or copied form an untrusted source, it may be dangerous to run. For more details, read about the executable bit.

thats as far as I get.

Click on top left "overview" https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/wine
Then go to the overview page and press on "Other versions of 'wine' in untrusted archives."

I have been able to finish the install of MS Office 2007.

I needed the updated version of Wine (1.2) is currently used and it was able to read the CD and install it just like a windows system would.

Thank you for the help!

I suggest researching online to see if wine 1.3 gives better results. It's beta but may help if the app misbehaves.

Glad you got the gold.

Please don't forget you have OpenOffice Office suite already installed on your Ubuntu it read and write .doc .xls etc. etc. file.
Menu Applications→Office...

You can also install OpenOffice on Windows... http://www.openoffice.org/
