CD-Rom windows Games won't play?

Asked by Anna Wu

Okay, so over the summer a friend of my mom changed my Microsoft XP computer to the Ubuntu Linux Software. Recently, when I tried to play one of my CD-Rom games, it didn't work. I put the CD in, and it showed up, and I tried to install it, but it didn't work. Is there anyway to make the Linux compatable with Microsoft based games? Please help!
(The game, is Nancy Drew mystery games for PC...)

You can try installing the package "Wine", which is basically an emulation system for windows -- your mileage may vary, espescially for games.

Wine maintains a database of programs and how well they work
http://appdb.winehq.org/

I ran a search for "nancy drew", and they all came up as "platinum" (works flawlessly) or "gold" (only minor problems, works well) score, so you shouldn't have any problems:

For example:
Nancy Drew: The Curse of Blackmoor Manor

firstly, linux is different from windoze and windoze programs won't run on linux.

secondly, you need to install wine, if you want to run windoze programs. go into synaptic package manager and type wine in the search box. click the little box beside it and select complete installation. then click the green arrow at the top of the screen.

there are programs that don't run on wine, but a lot of games do.

when wine is installed, click on the first menu item then on the bottom of the menu, click wine, then configure wine. then press okay.

now, go to where your game is installed, right click the file then choose open with wine.

that should do the trick. if the program doesn't run, then it doesn't work with wine. you can go to the wine site and let them know that you want to run the program and it doesn't work, and they might change wine to make it work.

Okay, thanks! I already had the wine program installed, but I just didn't know how to work it. So are those the only steps I need to make it work?

Can you help with this problem?
