Copy text from wine to other non-wine program

Asked by Lukas Venckus

I wish to know, if it is possible to copy text from program which runs in wine and paste it into other program, which runs without wine in ubuntu environment? For example, i run World of Warcraft through wine, and when i try to copy text from it, then switch to opera and try to paste text, nothing happens, it shows as if clipboard is empty. Is there a way to fix this issue? I am using Ubuntu 10.10 and my wine version is 1.2.1

You could copy to a text file and save it in c:\. This will then appear in ~/.wine/drive_c and can be copied. Not hugely graceful but is an ok workaround til you find something sleeker. I suggest you post on the wine forum too.

But how do i save to a text file, if i'm running world of warcraft? Turn it off, start notepad through wine and save it there or something?

Bump. Anyone know how to solve this problem? I'm sure there are more people that need to copy text from wine programs into non-wine ones :/

I'm not sure what's wrong, copying from Wine programs to native ones works for me. Maybe it's because I'm running a clipboard manager? You could try installing Glipper or Pastie and see if it helps.

Hmm, it seems that didn't work. Maybe this feature was implemented only in later than 1.2.1 wine versions?

That's a possibility - I'm running 1.3.6, seems stable if you want to try.

Downloaded 1.3.7 and it kind of works, but there is a catch. You can copy text to other programs while the one you're copying from is running. And in my case world of warcraft runs in fullscreen mode and i cannot minimize it, so when i alt+tab it to switch to other program, screen doesnt change, you just only get the control of the background program, but you still see world of warcraft in your screen, so you have to do some blind-shooting to copy text. Maybe there's a way to minimize fullscreen game running in wine, so that i can see what's happening in the background? Anyways, thanks for your help!

If you run winecfg then you can go to the graphics tab and select 'run in a virtual desktop' (which you can set to your monitor resolution) and that should work
