You may find luck with wine. Not all apps work and some won't even install. I suggest you check the appdb:

For compatibility. If the system is MAINLY used for the app then you CAN run windows in a virtualbox and run the app there but you will be running windows AND ubuntu which is a LOT of bloat.

You have three ways to fix problem.
1) use a dual boot to boot on Windows or Ubuntu
2) install packet wine which emulates Windows libraries (works with Office, most of office application and some not 3D games)
3) make a virtual machine (with KVM, Virtual Box or VMware) and install Windows (so you can use simultaneously Ubuntu and Windows). Works with all software except 3D games
At home, I use the three!
